I missed these early spreadsheets, but your formatting has improved dramatically

I've just been plunking at it over time, lost one of the earlier spreadsheets I'd been maintaining and rebuilt it. I'm almost to the point of calling toyota directly for the first / second gen numbers because they don't seem to exist anywhere on Google. The only thing I can find are 1994 and later.

The 5th Gen 4Runner has officially surpassed all 4th Gen sales numbers.

...not shown is the fact that the single highest sales year ever recorded was a third gen 4Runner in 1997 at 128,496. Just a mere 200 more units than 2017.

Way cool! Wait until the 6th gen... it will sell ONE MILLION 4RUNNERS!

Very interesting. Wonder if the 4Runner sales increases are partly due to the increasing blandness and electrification of today's typical appliances....I mean automobiles? Sometimes it's nice to have fun, simple and rugged instead of a highly efficient computer on wheels. This should bode well for the 4Runners future anyway.

Well, 2018 could theoretically push the 5th Gen deep into the 700k range and if rumors of no new model for '19 ring true as well we're into 800k after '19 as well.

I'd like the 4Runner to remain as close to its roots and refrain from chasing industry trends (electric / hybrid) or anything else that might compromise reliability and a conservative interpretation of what an SUV is.

These last few years have really cemented the 5th Gen as a future desirable. We see prices of '80s/90s Toyotas skyrocketing, I think 30 years down the line the same will be true with these trucks.

I view the 4Runner as the last true offroad capable SUV. To a lesser degree the Jeep GC is still out there and Wrangler offers a more rugged approach with less refinement and greater intrusion of the elements. With the move towards these "Car-based Utility Vehicles" or whatever Nom de Jour that segment seems to be operating off of.

The Tahoes (I should know, I have a '17 Z71) are too expensive for the average consumer and too large to really do a lot of the same things we do and the 4Runner really plays into the Adventure lifestyle / Overlanding concept that has become the latest rage (I used to just call it "camping")

Wow. I haven't consistently followed this thread but, with the sales numbers rising like they have, I could see a few more years before the debut of the 6th gen. Quite the contrast to the last two years of 5th ten sales.

Interesting point. If sales were slowing then there'd be more of a push to shake things up with a new model. But with sales numbers increasing......into record territory....what's a manufacturer to do?

I hate the waiting game.... LOL

I believe they break the GM sales as separate from GMC and Chevy models........and it's a sham. If they combined the Silverado and GMC pick up sales it would put a hurt on the F-150 being the the far and away sales leader. But then again GM does NOT want people thinking they are the same truck and it shocks Me how many guys argue when you tell them they are! The Tahoe just got a ''stripper'' model to push the price down and may benefit in sales from it. They have been way over-priced IMO for years though I like them. I hope Toyota don't screw the 6th Gen up chasing what the public ''thinks'' it wants. Give us what Toyota owners want....and if that's just a update on the same platform with a better trans and a little better mileage from a tweaked 4 liter along with a light sheetmetal change I am fine.:snacker:

Exactly. I have been in the GM performance industry for 5 years, mainly Duramax performance. There are minor differences between them, definitely not enough to warrant the price difference.

Edit - On a different note, Jeep did in fact listen to what Jeepers wanted in the new Wrangler. They hit it out of the park with the new JL. Jeep sales are going to sky rocket.

If they follow Jeep in listening to what current owners want, The new 4Runner will be even better.

I love the 4Runner and I dont see us ever getting rid of it. We also have a 2000 TJ Sport and a 2010 JK Rubicon, I see a JL Rubicon Diesel in our future.

Add 49,183 Yukon sales to get around 150K or about 20K more Tahoe/Yukon than 4Runner. Not bad.

I have always been a die hard Chevy owner. With that said (when my Duramax kicked the bucket last month, and we bought the 4runner) I have since been won over by the 4runner. I have had friends that are looking at new Tahoes ask me about the 4runner. After they have driven it, they are now looking at the 4runners. You cant beat their bang for the buck. I think if the price of GM SUVs keep rising, Toyota will continue having success with the 4runner.
