Do you use the locker a lot? I may be getting an SR5 this weekend and I'm coming from an FJ with a locker. I rarely used it the past 4 years but am not sure if I'll regret not having one.

I think it all depends on your driving choices. I would not have necessarily made it over this obstacle without it. ATRAC may have, but might not have made it. But I went out of my way to try.
I've used the locker probably once every 2 months. I like it.
But for the price difference between an sr5 and a trail edition, you could put in an air locker and probably come out ahead.

A buddy of mine just picked up an 06 Tacoma TRD off road 4x4 quad cab. Beautiful truck (I had one just like it. Got low speed rear ended and totalled it due to a hitch that was in and bent the frame), but if I were to get another Taco, I'd get the base 4x4, put in dual arb lockers and my own suspension and save a few G.
I digress. I think you'll love your 4r.

A locker helps... Atrac always figures it out, but it takes a while. Locker is instant traction.

Great feedback, thanks for the reply. One of my friends in the FJNE (FJ Northeasters) forum told me not to worry about the locker. Like you, he mentioned getting an ARB air locker and come out ahead of the game.

Looks like I know what I'm saving up for. Guess my wife will realize quickly that when I said I won't mod the 4runner, I meant I won't mod it for a week. Lmao

for me its about doing it with ease, without wheelspin, without ramming, bouncing, and generally being harder on the truck that required without these aids. I like being able to come up the hill out of our creek and leave only dented leaves versus ruts.

I was thinking more of a challenge vs overworking the truck. If I go wheeling and I don't feel my stomach drop at least once then it wasn't challenging enough.

hah! Well, it wasn't a planned trip. We took a detour after snowboarding at Mammoth mountain for the weekend and they wanted to see how far they could push the Mini (spoiler alert: not very far).
