Its about a mile north of the Dewey bridge. You can't see it from the road, and the spot to turn off is very easy to miss.

That looks like an old Jeep to me

This shot comes up when I search "Black Bear Pass". Gets me queasy every time I see it. I "plan" to drive Black Bear this summer, and the photo makes me wonder about my sanity. Good friend here in Durango who used to guide jeep runs over Black bear says the photo is fake, and it's much wider (Hummers have been over it, so he says). We'll see. Gulp. :crazy:

Not sure on when exactly the cave house was built. I have heard that it was only partially completed before being abandoned for whatever reason.

In AZ for the week for the Overland Expo. Rented a '12 SR5 for the trip. Drove Desert View along the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Later down to Sedona and up Schnebly Hill 'Road'. Truck doing just fine being all stock but I sure miss better tires and suspension. Not being able to air down since I still needed to drive up to Flagstaff was a pain but I do have new found respect for the SR5.

That is NOT Black Bear, at least as we know it in modern times. Until the early 60's it was still an abandoned pack trail that was re-opened and widened by local jeep clubs, but that vehicle doesn't look to be from that era. My dad had a Grand Cherokee in the mid 70's and that's what it looked like. Off topic, but what a POS. Parts literally fell off that thing on a regular basis.

My bad, it was a Wagoneer. It was an American Motors product and still a POS.

I too had a hard time but finally found Tim's Toyota in Prescott. Although once they see the returned truck they may never ever rent them again.

went up to otay mountain today. started off great.

ended up cutting a tire.

so i put the spare on. first time every changing a tire, by the way. and then promptly drove my happy ass to discount tire and bought 285/70/17 BF Goodrich all terrain t/a KO's.

nose dive, eliminated. i anticipate rubbing. i guess this will just make me need to install my lift that much sooner. or i'll just chop some plastic off.
