East Verde River

Headed up to the East Verde River for the day last weekend just passed Payson, AZ

How was it up at Box Canyon? I almost checked it out last weekend but went up to the East Verde River just passed Payson instead.

It was good. A little narrow at points in the canyon and had to get out and spot at moments. The way back through the canyon was a little more challenging. All in all a great time.

At Rausch Creek

Here's a pic of the first time I took her out wheeling.

Funny story, I also own a '74 Ford Bronco and I'm a member of a Bronco club. Last year for our 4 day wheeling trip at Rausch, I took the 4Runner.

I got some much crap for showing up in it, it was amazing.

First day we line up for the trails and a buddy is walking around the 4Runner with a pissy look. He said, "we are gonna be pulling you out all day long. You're just gonna slow us up. why'd you bring it?"

Well, 2 hours into the day we take a break and he now says, "I'll never admit this, and I'll never repeat it, but this 4Runner is amazing. I can't believe where you got this thing so far today."

Fast forward, a few weeks later I'm at the dealer getting something done and the service adviser comes out and says to me, "you've got every skid plate on the car dented and scratched." I ask if there is a problem and he laughs and says, "nope, we just aren't used to seeing these come back in and actually be used off road."

Went up Keystone Gulch and Hunkidori Mine. Hunkidori was lame.

How was the Verde?


It was pretty cool. More scenic than challenging, at least as far as we went. Other than a couple RZRs we were the only ones I saw too. We took the main trail (FR 209 - Crackerjack Rd) for maybe 1.5 hours hoping to get to Crackerjack Mine but a nasty storm was coming over the canyons so we went back the way we came.

Took the afternoon off and headed to Yankee Hill...nothing crazy as I was just running the loop. Only saw one other vehicle. Ran it from Alice east towards Central City, mainly on trail 175.1. Fun time, rocky, and lots of mud puddles!
