Another thing, I know the purpose of the casing deflector is to deflect the casings but it's being beat to hell on my 6920 actually taking little pieces of coating with it. That's not normal is it?

Shooting 193 and some 885 federal

Yes, I'm afflicted with left-handedness. HA. I normally run ambi safeties, mag releases and charging handles on my AR's.

As for the deflector - at least in my case it's normal. Paint started chipping off within the first 2k rounds. I don't even notice it anymore to be honest....just happy the cases aren't hitting my face.

Another vote for the Colt.

And yes, the brass deflector showing wear is completely normal.

wow I guess I didn't realize there would be so many people with 6920s! I'm still leaning towards the s&w though, its $1052 vs. $1152 (not the biggest factor) and it seems like the lower has more work done to it in terms of user friendliness like the larger trigger well, finger shelves on both sides, and a few mag well advancements

I understand that both the Colt and S&W are good. Out of curiosity, has anyone had any negatives with either of the two?

I have owned and built more AR's than I can count on both hands. In my experience, and from what I've seen the Colt is the better buy. The main reason for that is they are the rifle standard to which all others are held. They have wrote and developed the technical data package the US gov uses to spec their M4 rifles. The 6920 shares all of the same parts as the M4 carbine with the exception of the semiautomatic fire control group and the 16" barrel to meet NFA rules.

The S&W uses a few more commercial parts, main one being an AR15 bolt carrier vs the Colt's M16 carrier. They also typically use a 6061 receiver extension vs a 7075 extruded extension. Midlength or carbine gas is a wash. I've had both and they both work. Now all I have is 14.5" carbines. The Colt's also carry a higher price on the used market compared to other companies rifles.

Both of my rifles are using 14.5" Colt M4 barrels along with a few other Colt parts here and there.

Also, if your local Walmart sells guns, check there for Colts, my local store has them regularly for $1050. Some online retailers have them for right at a grand pretty regularly too.

Cool thanks guys, I know it's dumb to question a deflector doing its job, I guess being a newbie to this style gun is showing, lol.....

I did do some research but most I found was people complaining of brass markings, which I would expect to show I just wasn't wanting my purdy new gun to get chip marks but I was the same way with my runner and now I don't even notice a new scratches

I just read up on the differences between the bolt carriers and that swayed me more towards the colt, then again I can put the M16 carrier into the S&W if I felt the need for it or saw too much wear on the firing pin.

receiver extension and extruded extension? are you talking about the what the buffer tube is made out of? Because I couldn't find which they make the buffer tube out of after a half hour of searching, only that other forum members say it is 'mil-spec'. I think they were referring to size and not material.

and I'm not worried about the used selling price, Ive only gotten rid of maybe two guns so far and those went to family members.

lastly, building a 6920-based rifle could be my next venture since it seems like an easier starting point than most other receivers. This first one will get just a few changes. Thanks for everyones help and input so far!

Again, I think the Colt is the better buy between the 2. If you are looking for an alternative, BCM, LMT, and Daniel Defense are popular choices that build rifles to the same standard as Colt. BCM and DD also come in more configurations if you chose. Things like free float rails, different muzzle devices, etc.

Both of my rifles are mixtures of BCM, and Colt with a few LMT and DD parts mixed in here and there. One is a complete LMT lower with a Colt upper. The one pictured on the last page is a bit more mixed than that.

Right now I'm mired in the middle of a Spike's/LWRC/VLOTR build because I can't find the parts I want or the colors I want them in, and since I have a "few" guns I'm not in a hurry to finish.

Another vote for the Colt LE6920 - it's been 100% reliable and will eat any type of ammo including corrosive steel cased crap.

Thanks for the input guys! even though I kept talking about the S&W you didn't budge from the 6920! I decided thats what I'll go with and change a few things to my liking. I also read a TON of posts on other forums about the Colt and S&W and the Colt was always put above the S&W 10 times out of 10, as it should be.

I shot a steel match yesterday. One guy was running mixed range ammo thru his SV open in 9 major. The very expensive gun was not a fan!

does anyone here use a drop leg holster?

I rode with a guy over the weekend that uses one while on a dirt bike.
since I wear a pressure suit, my shoulder harness is a no go. and my pants are snug fitting and no belt loops...so an IWB/OWB holster also doesn't work. but, I really don't like being without it, so im looking for something else, besides sticking it in the bottom of my hydro pack.

his setup was pretty slick, he wears it over his riding gear.

thinking about a safari land, but open to suggestions.

I use one for hunting and carry a 1911 or a HK45 as a backup sidearm when I'm alone in the woods.

I would look into attaching some kind of flap with velcro closure... not only for concealment purposes, but also to keep the dust/dirt/moisture at bay.

I have a serpa for the 1911 and a custom kydex for the HK45 (since no one makes holsters for that damn gun).

The serpa has good retention to the point I haven't felt the need for any additional straps or retention--but then I'm just out in the woods with it.

Pistol: the barrel crown is damaged (recrowning it is cheap and easy), the barrel is fouled or shot out

Rifle: barrel crown, wrong twist for ammo type, muzzle device attached on wrong, barrel shot out or fouled

Other: your ammo is out of spec and too small

So I just received my CHL for Oregon, and now it's decision time.

I've decided I want to carry in 9mm for now, so what platform do you guys recommend in that caliber?
