4) .22 Pistol (Hear Buckmark and Ruger are excellent in this category)
5) 1911 (Fell in love with a Springfield 1911. This is my dream pistol)

I have a suggestion to kill two birds with one stone. Colt makes a 1911 chambered in .22lr. The gun is actually built by Walther (who are known for highly accurate .22s), and then covered with a 1911 skin and branded by Colt. Its the best of both worlds!

I bought a Bersa .45 long before I learned about the history of the 1911. After learning, I wanted a 1911 but couldn't justify spending $900 on another .45, so I found that .22 (for half the cost of a .45) and I am very happy with it :D

I hear those are a lot of fun.

IDPA is a hoot. The competitive nature helps motivate me and as a result I'm a much better shooter than I was a couple years ago.

1) Glock 19 (Just want a solid, reliable 9mm, might possibly CC this)

Great gun. The factory sights suck. Replace them with 10-8 or Heinie.

2) M4, SIG 556 or possibly SCAR (Need an AR, might save up for the SCAR)

Skip the SIG and get an AR. There is a huge aftermarket for AR parts so you can customize it to your heart's content. I don't have any opinion on the SCAR other than 1) it is very expensive and 2) I heard that the special ops folks used it for a while and then dropped it, for reasons unknown.

3) Remington 11-87 Police 12 ga. (For home defense, also fun to shoot!)

Good design. I've heard some gripes on quality lately.

4) .22 Pistol (Hear Buckmark and Ruger are excellent in this category)

Buckmark and Ruger MKII are both good choices.

5) 1911 (Fell in love with a Springfield 1911. This is my dream pistol)

For a base 1911, right now I think Ruger is hard to beat.

6) M1 Garand (Not sure why, but this gun has always intrigued me for it's reliable reputation, as well as it being considered the weapon that won WWII)

I've got a couple M1s. Nice guns. Get one from the CMP: Civilian Marksmanship Program

that box is amazing. so is your collection though :)

Alright... found one even cheaper than the P250 that seems to be bit more of what I want. Sig SP2022. anyone used that one before? Ive been watching them sell between $400-500 new.

just wondering, is .40 really that much more per round than 9mm?

Normal prices should be around the .24-.26 cents per 9mm of target FMJ.
And .35-.38 cents per .40 of target FMJ.

Your protection rounds, Jacketed Hollow Points JHPs, will also be more but you don't shoot a lot of them so, not a big deal.

I looked at these saw that there had been some issues with it cycling properly, so I decided to stay with what I had been issued and bought an 870 tactical. I much prefer the reliability of a mechanical action and fewer moving parts to the semi-auto. It's super-easy to strip and clean, even for a novice (the 870 armorer training program is only 2 days long, and the only reason it's that long is because it covers things that most people will never need to do - like replacing a barrel)

The 870 has been proven to be bombproof time and time again and is issued by more agencies than I can think of. I carry mine in the field when checking hunters and have literally dropped it in the water (as in completely submerged, and had to kick around to find it again), dragged it through the mud, tossed it back in the rack in my truck and didn't clean it because I got busy, and then still had it fire flawlessly come range day.

Both :eyebrows:

lol yes both would be nice, and yeah I plan on waiting for the craziness to blow over before looking into an AR, other than they are driving up the cost of ammo as well since on the rifle I was leaning towards a .308 for some fun ranged shooting. :eyebrows:

whatcha got your eye on? been looking for .308 as well and can't decide, I've been wanting an m1a forever but am thinking I'm getting sucked into mythos too much rather than buying what i will actually enjoy shooting, i really want a scar-h but can't afford one, man those are fun to shoot! so have been leaning towards an ar-10 platform but since they aren't standardized like the 15's it makes thing harder to decide upon, too much info out there that conflicts and i'm an idiot and don't know crap, i like asking some of you guys your thoughts? i like magnified scopes.....if that helps and not inserted in bolt action at this time...that's for later and i'll probably want something in 7mm,6.8, or .338 unless that's just stupid? again, just getting into this and don't know anything really, knock some sense into me if needed

I have an 870 and it is virtually bombproof but I've found (and confirmed with others) that cheap Winchester target loads (Wal-Mart specials) have a tendency to jam. It is very frustrating when you're shooting dual clays and can't get the second shot off. Some gurus talk about filing down some piece of metal inside the receiver, but I've since stopped using the Winchester loads and haven't had the problem.

As far as replacing a barrel, why did it take so long to teach? I constantly swap between my 18" home defense barrel and the OEM long barrel every time I go out and come back from shooting sporting clays.

Before the current stupidity, 7.62 NATO was running about $1 per round. 5.56 NATO was running $0.30 to $0.40 per round. That right there should convince you to get a rifle chambered in 5.56 first. (Well, a rifle in .22lr is a high priority as well).

I suggest that you get yourself an AR-15, if you can find one. Good luck with that, though, because most gun shop shelves are bare, their distributors warehouses are empty, and the manufacturers are running three shifts and are back-ordered forever.

As for 7.62 NATO rifles, I have an early Armalite AR10 A4, FAL, and M1A. Of the three, I prefer the M1A. The M1A has awesome sights, great magazines, outstanding trigger out of the box, and it just balances right off the shoulder. There are a couple downsides to an M1A. To get the best accuracy, you will need to bed the stock. And it is hard to scope.

I really like AR15s, but the AR10 is just a bit too big and heavy. Compared to an AR15, it feels like an oar. The AR10 is easy to scope. Perhaps other AR10s are better.

Last on my list is the FAL. It just feels too nose-heavy to me. Magazines are (were?) available and cheap. Out of the box triggers just suck. If you put a scope-mount dust cover on it, then you either remove the cover to clean (thus messing up your zero) or have a hard time reaching the chamber to properly clean it.

FAL fan-boys claim that the gas adjustment of the FAL is somehow a super-duper, gotta-have feature. I disagree entirely. In fact, I think it is a bad feature. Adjusting the gas system isn't that hard, but badly adjusted gas systems are one of the main causes of rifles sent back to DSArms -- the owners just didn't (or couldn't) follow the procedure.

If you are giving the bolt too much gas, the bolt will get pushed back too violently, potentially ripping the rim off the cartridge case. If that happens, your rifle is down until you can extract the broken case.

If you are not giving the bolt enough gas, then the case will not completely extract and it can get jammed up between the bolt carrier and the dust cover. Now you can't open the action until you get the bolt carrier forward, so clearing this jam isn't easy. Been there, done that, and it just sucks.

In contrast, here is the adjustment procedure for the AR15 and M1A gas systems:

Yup, that's it. Nothing. They just work.

Extra knobs and dials and doohickeys aren't necessarily better. In this case, I believe they are demonstrably worse.

A year ago I read a Field & Stream article about the new .300 OSSM which Olympic uses in their ARs instead of .308. They had good things to say about the cartridge. It might be worth checking out if you're looking at a big-bore AR.:thumb3:

I hunt with a .30-06 bolt action. While I love my AR (.223), there is nothing quite like the bang of a big bore elk round :)

1) Olympic Arms just sucks.

2) .30 OSSM is a niche cartridge, pushed by a single, second (or third) tier manufacturer. It will never be big in the marketplace, so as a result, ammo and components will be very expensive. Either learn to reload or find a different caliber.

already got a few 5.56/.223 and a couple of .22's for target practice, ready to get into the .308 game, i see your vote is

m1a, ar-10 and lastly FAL? what do you think about the g3 clones, i heard teh roller back? design is flawed but they shot nice and the trigger sucks, but all i really care about is accuracy and scope usability without having to re-sight often....

also another vote for the 870, my first shot gun and the least cared for gun of them all but still fires every single time, only time i ever had jams was simply not racking all the way, the throw..slide... on my 870 feels longer than other's i have shot...might just be my mind...

A flat-top AR-10 is the best of the battle rifles for mounting a scope, no question. Just buy some rings and you are good to go.

HK-91 mags were cheap and available (dunno if they still are). I've only shot an HK-91 once, but that was one that had been legally converted to full ammo. I didn't get a chance to determine how accurate it was. My first shot hit the target. My second was over the target. And I hope to God my third shot didn't clear the berm. A G3/full auto HK19 climbs like a mother.

The owner was a NH state legislator who drove a Chevy Blaser with the license plate HK-91. And she was hot. But I digress...

I don't have much experience with the HK-91. Like the FAL and the M1A, the HK-91 wasn't really designed to be scoped. I'm not aware of how well the claw-mount scope mounts work.

For the M1A, if you are going to scope it, then you'll want a cheek pad for the stock. You'll also need a good scope mount. Don't bother with cheap M1A mounts -- they all suck. Get a Sadlak. You're looking at more than $200 for the mount alone.

Thanks! I don't have any hands on experience with the SP2022 but I do own a Sig P226. Great guns, very reliable (sorry it didn't make my list of top 5). If you find one on the shelf for $400-$500 I'd say buy it without hesitation. If you find any magazines on the shelf for it, grab them too!

Beautiful pistol and box! This reminds me of the scene in Tombstone when Wyatt opens up the box with his Peacemaker to 'come out of retirement':eyebrows:

Thanks Reino. I remember that scene well. One of my favorite movies!

not sure yet on which .308 but i know I want to look more towards a reliable bolt-action, just not sure by who yet.

Remington 700, that's the first bolt action I'm going for me thinks, lots of options for it, cheap , highly regarded , and limitless amount of money you can dump into them... interested in seeing where you go with the bolt action topic now, hahaha

Yup, that would be my choice for a .308 bolt action. Tried and true. However, for .308 auto-loader, I would probably go with an Entreprise Arms FN FAL carbine or a Springfield M21 Tactical.... or, why not both?
