Yesterday was a beautiful day. almost 45* out. snow is now forecasted at least for the next seven days.
Got out to shoot again. will be trading my sunglasses for clear lens ones next time. my last four shots were only visible by the sparks the target made.
It still marked some exciting stuff for me. I had just cleaned both my 10/22 and hi point this weekend. the Ruger was terrible though. It hadn't been cleaned for at least three years, and the guy I bought it from said that I really should clean it first. Never did though.
Anyway, it took me a good three hours to clean it. I completely pulled everything apart. Since I am mechanical in nature, of course I had to just pull it apart and figure out how it went together. Got lucky on that. Also did a little work on the sear and hammer so now it has about a 2-3lb pull. Polished the bolt group too. Went through about 50 rounds and I'm really happy with the trigger. Scope needs some serious adjustment though.
For the hi-point I just pulled off the slide and cleaned/lubed it up. Polished the nasty part of the slide and also the feed ramp. Put about 40 rounds through it with no trouble this time. I guess I didn't mention it, but last time I had a failure to feed on the fourth round. I realized later that it was from polishing the thing dry with a Q-tip and not even oiling it after.
Yesterday was also the first time in two years (which was then my first time ever with guns) that I've actually tried to aim for a paper target.
First magazine is shown by the pink and orange holes... my second is shown by the green and yellow holes. that would be the hi-point at 7 yards.
this next one is a mess of things at 25 yards Hi-point, 10/22, and a Glock 26. You can see the scope adjustment needed on the Ruger. I don't remember if glocks are above sight or below sight though.... No idea where any of those went.
I thought I'd post that up to get some feedback. Plus I can't sleep anyway. Also had my first experience with shotguns! First one was a Stevens 320 in 12g and a Remington 870 in 12g. I have to say, that's the first rifle-type of gun I've fired with recoil. I absolutely loved it. I could certainly go for much more. I'll try a bolt action rifle next time.

ugh there's 12 boxes of .380 at walmart and im not old enough yet.
oh and I really want a shotgun. almost bought one today for $180 but I'm still gonna wait on it.

I'll hold my congrats until you get it, but that's a good sign. Which lower did you get?
Well the good news is you have it. That way when it gets back, you can actually shoot it. What color cerakote did you go with?

Agreed - I'll give it a few days and call them to confirm. I went with the DSArms mil-spec complete lower.
Yep, I now have at least a box of each that I needed and a machine gun session (Christmas gift!) awaiting me, so I can't wait to get it back and hit the range. I ended up getting "Stainless" on the barrel, slide, and a new metal trigger and I'll keep the frame black for now. I wanted a brighter silver but that's all he had and I couldn't beat the price. I'm planning to get the P11 fully coated as well once I get the PF-9 back.
I have some others I want done but this guy seems more comfortable with the Kel-tecs. I may wait on the others until I get to CO.

sounds similar to one of the students' rifles.
Anyone have any experience with the CZ612? It retails about $100 more than the h&r 870 18.5" barrel 12g copy that I almost bought earlier. There doesn't seem to be much on it.

I believe CZ has their own forums that probably has good info. Just keep in mind forums tend to be partial to their purpose. Aren't CZs usually clones out of Turkey? If so, most of them seem pretty decent. The Akkar I picked up recently seems well made, I just need to get it to the range to confirm. The Mossberg 500 is still my

I've read that the HR copy of the 870 appears to be almost a better version of it. Better than the tactical express ones anyway. And they are owned by Remington too. They only cost $180.

Where did you read this? I'd be curious to see how a cheaper imported clone has improved on the original.

I probably will pick it up soon enough. I'm going to modify my exhaust from my focus to put on the 4Runner... that should give me around $100 for the factory cat.

According to this review, the 1871 looks like a good value for the money. But no where does it say it's better than the 870.
Based on this review, it seems this is where you got your opinion from. This link is a 2007 repost of the original source, which is no longer available, comparing one shotgun from each manufacturer - NEF Pardner pump shotgun vs. Remington 870 Express. Based on the round count, one could argue that the two shotguns were purchased prior to 2005 (where the round count was 12,350). It's hard to say that the same point of reference +8 years ago can still apply to a current comparison of the two shotguns. I see no credible evidence that even at the time of the review, that the Pardner pump had made any improvement over the 870 regarding form or function.
As such, it's incorrect to make a blanket statement that all current NEF Pardner pump shotguns are better than Remington 870 express's let alone the 870 Tactical express which was not tested.
It's your money, spend it as you see fit. If you are on a limited budget and you don't want to wait, the 1871 seems like a good value for the money. But, at the end of the day, it's still a copy of a shotgun that has been used by LE/Military and private citizens worldwide for a reason.

I did more research than a 6 year old thread. I just grabbed those real quick to show you. I guess I could compare it with our school's three 870s with their weird wood colored synthetic stock.
It's pretty much a Norinco manufactured under one of Remington's companies.
I'm not trying to convince anyone though. I turned down a benelli a few month ago because I had never fired shotgun and didn't want one. now I get a huge kick out of the recoil and want more.

Most copies I've seen or used do not seem to improve on the original, but recreate it at a lower cost to sell at a lower price. Where they make up the difference in price is often with materials and overseas labor. In most cases they seem to sacrifice on the furniture if they are using lower quality materials, but the main components seem well made. There are always exceptions and it pays to research and check them out in person if possible. I agree to call them an improvement could be exaggerating, but most of the time the clones operate just fine and will serve their purpose. Even the best of the brand names have their flaws now and again too.

Your school had 870's for students to use? was this for a trap shooting team?
Agreed. As I said, in this case it appears to be good value for the money. No company is perfect and sometimes flaws pass through even the most stringent quality controls.

The college has three 870s, a couple .223 and .22 rifles, my favorite .45 1991a1 (officers acp now) a few glocks, an xd, a big shiny .44 magnum, and the standard .22 plinkers. Plus whatever we bring. It's rather entertaining to see the whole police building surrounded by people with guns.
I'm pretty sure I was just excited. I really wanted to take some recoil this weekend. It's all good though, should be another range day today (monday), and according to the schedule, Tuesday as well. Never fired a rifle bigger than .22 so I think thats on the list.
Forgot to add that I said I heard it was better because of the thicker steel receiver or ejector (don't remember now) but I've taken metallurgy and should know better... they probably make it thicker because they're using steel with less carbon content due to its cost.

Had a good time, it was warm enough too. shot my first bolt action rifle which was an illuminated scope savage .223. put about 25 rounds through that. Also fired a Mosin Nagant, first time using iron sights (that thing's pretty cool). put about 14 rounds and a dummy round through a glock 17, about 20 rounds and a dummy that got stuck in the barrel of my .380, one shot of a .22 bolt action (too boring) and about 16 12g shells through an 870.
It got dark enough that we ended up spotlighting the range with the chargers' spotlight and my Hellas
