Having a hard time deciding between two different pistols. I'm interested in adding a 1911 to my collection and I've narrowed the field down to two choices.
This will mainly be a nightstand gun and taking it to the range for a little competitive shooting here and there. I don't intend to daily cary this pistol.
Comparing the two pistols is more like comparing apples to oranges. So some background, I was originally interested in a Sig tacops TB 1911. They come with a threaded barrel and 4 mags for 959.00+ tax at my local dealer. Decided to put in an order, and five weeks later I'm still waiting for someone my local dealer is affiliated with to get one stocked. It seems the threaded barrels are on back order at sig. I decided to press my dealer to see which 1911's fitting my interests were actually in stock and available and out of that list I have come up with two choices I think will fit my needs well. I opted out of the threaded barrel feature as I don't own a can at the moment. As well the process to get one will take about a year here on top of another 1200 bucks or so. Not that I'll never own one It just doesnt serve much purpose to have a threaded barrel at the moment. As well I haven't looked at higher end 1911's as they're priced pretty respectably. I'd probably pick up an ed brown or wilson combat if the budget were there.
So my FFL dealer mentions this Dan Wesson option... and throws a huge wrench in my decision. As these Dan wessons from what I can research are showing quality right up there with Ed brown and WC at half the cost. So my in stock ready to purchase options are
A.) Sig tacops
B.) Dan wesson Specialist
So from my research I'm to understand most common run of the mil 1911's can be finicky, require some tuning as well as maybe even some gun smithing here and there to get fitments perfect to say the least. I'm to understand Sig has solved some of this issue with there external extractor design. taking the need away to tune an internal extractor. Well If you purchase a dan wesson or WC or ed brown. They come from the factory highly tuned and fitted ready and fit for any duty. I've skimped across a few counts of the sigs extractor having issues but its not common enough to say its worth worrying about. plus both customer services are outstanding enough to make any wrongs right with either purchase.
what it comes down to really.. is an 800 dollar difference. I'm extremely drawn to the cleanliness and quality of the DW. However, the price point and functionality of the sig make me feel almost dumb for considering spending more money on a similar platform. I could add two guns to my collection for the price of the DW. Yet neither of those to guns would get anywhere close to the quality of the DW. an age old quantity or quality question. Thanks in advance for any replys in the matter

I dont have any experience with the Dan Wesson but I have owned 2 sig 1911s and both had extractor issues out of the box. Kind of disappointing since I paid 1k for a scorpion 1911. I will say that both times they were warrantied and I had the problem fixed shortly after. Great guns once the problem was resolved though and their customer service is helpful and friendly. I will also tell you since this falls in the 1911 category, I know you didnt mention Kimber but stay away from the new Kimbers! They have very disappointing frame issues as of lately that ive seen in person. Its gotten to the point that 2 of the local gun shops dropped Kimber from their product line.

Thanks, I have seen a lot of negative feedback on Kimber's. There was a kimber warrior on my dealers stock sheet. It was easily turned away after a little research lol. How long ago did you pick up the sigs that you had issues with?

The scorpion I picked up about a year ago which should have had the extractor issue resolve according to sig. It also had issues with short stroking and then catching the casing. The dealer I got it from sent it back to sig and they had it fixed up and back to me in a lil over a week and a half. From my understanding they polished the feed ramp, put a new exractor in and replaced the spring as the one in it was too stiff. I put about 400 rounds through it after and it shot perfect. I also owned an older traditional series 1911 from sig. I bought it "used" from a gun shop and it had extractor issues which I somewhat was not surprised by. I put used in quotations because although it was used, the original owner never shot it. It came as it did from factory. Sig still warrantied the gun on their dime even though I wasnt the original purchaser though, so that says something about their customer service IMO. I will tell you Im a 1911 kinda guy though, I also own a colt stainless model, rock island 9mm compact, para warthawg, and para black ops.

Well long story short took the time to put both guns in my hand at the local gun store. No brainer Dan Wesson all the way! Damn thing fell right into the palm of my hand! Played with a Wilson and a similar Ed brown. I'm definitely a happy proud new owner of a Dan Wesson specialist! Should get here Friday!

Back in January, I found a Ruger precision rifle in .308 at a local gun store. I really was looking for the 6.5 Creedmoor but figured I could just swap barrels. Two days later, I found a 6.5 Creedmoor for sale. So I bought it and sold my .308 that same night.
Couple of weeks later, I was able to zero it and put about 60 rounds of ammo through it including 140gr AMAX and ELD's and 130gr Prime before I packed it up for a two-day advanced precision rifle class over in Eastern WA this past weekend.
During the class, the rifle didn't miss a beat. Out of the box, they are very accurate and consistent. I was able to gather DOPE out to 1250 yards, shoot movers at 500 yards, engage multiple targets at different distances both dialing and using holdovers while shooting off barricades, tank traps, shoot houses, rooftops, barrrels on a hillside, etc. At the end of the last day, we weren't able to leave until we get multi-hits on a 1440 gong - 5 hits out of 7 shots.

If any of you considering taking a precision rifle class in the PNW, I strongly recommend the CORE Shooting Solutions class led by Scott Saterlee. Great instructor and one of the top PRS shooters in the nation.

Though I've got several guns, I'm a big fan of .22s. This is my collection short of a Ruger 10/22 and a Taurus PT22. The Browning BL22 is one I've had for 40 years. The Browning BAR-22 I picked up a few years ago. And the Colt Woodsman is my prize... it is a '51 model and is in almost mint condition with the original cardboard box and Sears handwritten receipt.
