As a long time H&K fan with a healthy respect for Sig Sauer & Kmber tossed in, I was pleasantly surprised last week. I trust my life to H&K on a daily basis, a P2000SK as a carry for the last 3 years, a Kimber Pro Carry II for 1.5 years before that.
Two weeks ago I purchased a CZ 75 D PCR Compact, last week it went out to the Tennessee range. I'd heard good things about the CZ 75 for years, but it took me 6 years since seeing one to pick one up. I fired off the first mag, and was dumbfounded. The 100 count box went, then another, and another. This thing never jammed, always shot true, was controllable, comfortable, simple to operate, just intuitive and natural. My only complaint was the slide was a little difficult to get a grip on to rack. Part of this was the design, part of it the still new and stiff springs, and something I fully expect to get easier as I break it in and continue training with it.
I used to suggest an XD to any new shooter as a good simple gun to learn on. While I've never personally been a fan of Glock, there's nothing wrong with it either. I've also seen good results from those who've trained on the older steel frame Ruger centerfire pistols. They all move down the list and CZ goes to the top. It even falls into an affordable price range as well (~$600 to the ~$500-550 of the XD, and $800+ for HK/SIG).
For reference I was throwing in a mag of Sig M11A1 and HK USP9 intermittently with about every second mag of the PCR, as a comparison. While the M11A1 was new out of the box like the PCR, the USP9 had been well broken in. The HK didn't feel better or worse, just different, and less ergonomic. The PCR did feel smoother and easier than the M11 though, not quite as bulky either. An opinion shared by three family members, two of which were significantly less experienced shooters.
At the end of a week, I have a new favorite gun. Today there was an order placed to CrossBreed holsters so that I can start carrying it soon as well!
