Offroad gps?

Anybody in CA have experience with the California Trail Maps app that they'd like to share? I think a t4r.org member created it.

Huh.... that thing looks physically identical to the old bluetooth Garmin GPS receiver I used with my Dell PDA (back in the olden days before smart phones). I still have it... it obviously won't have the ability to track the newest satellites, but it may still function. Gonna have to try it out some day.

The Toyota nav system in my 4th gen has a surprising number of dirt roads in it. Almost all of them in Colorado and Utah in my experience so far. It's useless for navigating, though.

I have a PLB for emergency signaling. It's more reliable than SPOT or similar devices for calling for help, and there's no subscription. The downside is there is no messaging option, so it should only be used as a last resort.

Compared to SPOT, a PLB transmits with higher power, and it has three ways to find you. First satellites can estimate your position within about 1km using the Doppler effect from the signal it sends out. Then if it can get a GPS signal it will send your GPS coordinates to the satellite. There is also a short range radio signal it transmits so rescuers can find you from the ground or the air using direction finding techniques.

I use Gaia maps on an old Nexus 7 tablet. It's available for Android and iOS. Download offline maps and you're good to go

So how will the iPad know where I am with no cell service? Bluetooth to the truck?

Does your iPad have GPS? If it has GPS it will get the position from that. If it does not have GPS you will need something like the Garmin Glo or Dual XGPS regardless of your cell signal

GaiaGPS is what i recommend as far as which app to use

bad elf is another to consider. the advantage is that it doesn't deal with BT and it's connected to the device, the disadvantage is that depending on where/how you mount your tablet it might not have a great view of the sky

I went with the GLO, a hardwire kit, belt clip that I will modify and mount somewhere. Looking forward to the install this weekend.

Could not wait once I had all the parts. Glo is mounted on a magnetic cell holder so I can throw it in my pocket for hiking. Pad got mounted on the usual ram mount pro clip combo. Thanks for the suggestion [MENTION=113833]e60ral[/MENTION]
