What kind of gps unit you guys use for off-roading? My phone and the car gps simply doesn't work in the wild.

I use my iPad and Delorme Inreach as the GPS receiver.

I use a Garmin Zumo with topo maps. There are a couple of options to assist your smartphone. You can download offline maps. The phone will retrieve the offline maps during low cell service or when you option the offline mode. There are also external GPS modules that connect thru Bluetooth.

This. Lowrance in my boat and love it, don't use/need it enough for my off-road truck so backcountry gets it done. Tablets are cheap, ram mount and backcourt app FTW.
+1 for inreach...
I use their earthmate app and feed it into my screen with the Avity. Slick as can be.
Also can use for off-grid texting. Worth 11.95 month

Delorme does satellite texting but I also carry a sat phone for emergencies.

and what if that satellite phone was difference between life and death?

Well it's cheap then!
If you go and venture off the path that is out of your cell carriers range, a sat phone is worth its weight in gold.
Kinda like in my boat..cross the bar and it changes the game. EPRIB is a must have and the $600 price tag is nothing to save lives.

You can rent satellite phones. It's well worth the money, especially if you're traveling remote trails in the desert, alone, which is what I do.

+2 for InReach. I'm a merchant Mariner and the 50$/month unlimited text is a sanity saver at sea and in the back woods in my runner it could be a life saver. Sprint cell phone coverage in NC mountains is terrible. And you can download trail maps to your iPad or iPhone and the inReach bluetooths to them and gives you an offline GPS attenna. I paid 300$ a couple years ago for mine. I believe they have gotten cheaper and garmin just bought them out earlier this year.

No I don't I'm just really frugal with my purchases. And the DeLorme solved two issues, satellite messaging and acting as a GPS receiver for my bluetooth setup.
You can pay as you go but I think my monthly plan is 36 dollars and it's like 40 incoming and outgoing texts, plus tracking. Which is really nice for my parents because when I head into Bend you get no cell coverage near the passes. I can turn that on and they can actually see where I am or if something happened.
I carry a Iridium Extreme that I got from a friend. I basically just got a 200 dollar phone card and I think it's 1.50/min. I've only used it a couple of times, and you only have 5min per call before the satellite passes out of view, but it's paid for itself already by providing a last ditch after cell and HAM might go unanswered.
