Oil and filter???

According to the sticker on my window, I'm needing an oil change on my new 4runner. I've always used Castrol GTX High Mileage oil with no problems, but would like some input on what to use in my 4runner (03 v8 4x4 with 123k miles). Also, what filters are you guys using? Thanks!!!

I do my oil change at every 5,000. I also do a (5) wheel rotation & wash the inside of my rims, plus clean my brakes all at the same time.

I'm using the regular Castrol GTX 5w30. And using OEM filter. If you've ever seen the inside of an OEM filter, you'll see why, there's no comparison.

Wow, a lot of good reading, thanks! Looks like I'll be using the OEM filter for sure, just not sure on oil I'll probably stick with the Castrol, hasn't failed me yet. I'm a bit surprised at the oil change intervals though. I've always done them right at or right above 3k miles. I don't know that I'm brave enough to go 7500, but I'll probably change every 5k miles using regular oil (non synthetic). Where are you getting your filters? I've got a hookup with one of the dealers in the state, but they are 2 hours away and I don't feel like driving down there just for some filters. I'm like you though, I'll stock up when I get them.

Look at one of our sponsors (click on Patznet) or other Toyo dealer that discounts parts and order a case online. UPS will drop them at your door. By ordering a case you can usually talk them into more of a break and you get distribute the cost of UPS over more filters. Ordering and shipping one at a time makes them expensive...

Change mine at every 4k using regular dino oil and the 90915-YZZD3 filter, which is the V8 filter.

+1 on the OEM filters. They really don't cost much more than those orange pieces of crap you can buy at Walmart. The Toyota filters actually filter the oil though. Look at Toyota dealers on the web and buy several at a time plus any other parts you may need or want to make the shipping costs worthwhile. Prices do vary from dealer to dealer so you can save if you shop around.

Castrol is good oil, been using it for many years. I usually change 3-4K, never more than 5K. Never believed that 7.5K interval, even with synthetic, the oil just gets too dirty.

I'm gonna bump this back up. I've got to get the oil changed, I just passed the interval and I like to try to stick to them. I've got the OEM filter with plenty of Castrol GTX High Mileage 10w30 sitting at home ready to be put in. However, I've had a little too much spare time on the web and have been reading up on Synthetics such as Royal Purple. I'm really considering making the switch, but it nearly doubles the cost of the oil change. If I'm sticking to a 4-5k mile interval, would going to the RP really help me any? My family always uses the Castrol and we've never had any engine issues (and had several vehicles with 200+k miles). Since this will be my first oil change, I want to get some oil and stick with that brand. Any input? Thanks!

Personally, I'd stick with the Castrol. It's a good hydrocracked oil and will be just as good as an expensive synthetic. Unless you plan to severely increase the mileage between your oil changes, then you wont benefit much from a Synthetic.

I use Castrol GTX and Wix oil filters...

If you are not interested in pushing your oil change interval to 10K+ miles, or drive in extreme sub zero temps stick with GTX. The 4.7L V8 is pretty easy on oil and with 5K OCI you should be gtg for a long time. On the other hand with some M1 EP and a top notch filter you can probably go for 15K+ miles between oil changes which does spread out the increased cost of the oil (M1EP is still only $26/5qt @ WM).

Edit: The OEM Thai Denso filters are not that good, the Japanese Denso 20014 filters are fantastic though.

The Thai one is YZDD3 one it is NOT Denso. The Denso one from japan and ends in 20004.

Theyre both Denso! One is from Japan for the JDM and one is made in Thailand for USDM. There is also Denso that is made in Malaysia too.
