Oil brand preference

I am curious what everyone is running for oil. I have been running mobil 1 high mileage synthetic with a mobil 1 filter, but I am looking for something else to try. I have got a slight whine in the motor somewhere, and I have heard that some have been able to remedy the noise (superficial but drives me nuts) with a different brand or weight oil. I love how easy it is to change the oil on these 4.0s and I usually change every 5k miles. I have a 04 limited v6 with 160k and it runs great!

Mobile 1 full synthetic 5w-30 and oem filters (buy them by the case off amazon) Do the same for our corolla with 0w-20 and it's been working out great. Usually do 5-6k mile OCI and it comes out light brown still. We've actually gone to 10k on the corolla and it still looks like it's doing well.

ETA: I buy the oil at Walmart to save like $10/5qt container. My local NAPA had a promotion for 0w-20 6qt for $25 so I picked up like 4 cases...

Thats what I usually do. Walmart seems to be the place to go for discount Mobil 1.
 
Question for you guys, the owner before me used regular motor oil, so naturally, I just kept it the same. Would I hurt the engine at all if I switched to full synthetic? Would you just keep it the same and call it a day? I feel like regular oil is more expensive than full synthetic oil nowadays. lol
 
i use mobil 1 extended performance, i do 10k changes with m1 -209 filter.
i did my valve cover gasket at 178k and i didnt see any sludge, it was super clean.

now for whine noise, check all pulley. also you might want to change out the power steering fluid for some atf dex 3.
 
I’ve been running Mobil 1 0w-30 with Toyota filter. I buy the oil at Walmart, and the Toyota filters by the case on Amazon. This oil has worked very well on my other vehicles, so I decided to run it on my 4Runner as well so I don’t have to stock several oil types. Now, I always have some on hand for whatever vehicle needs to be changed.

changing from normal to synthetic oil will not hurt anything in the engine at all. in fact you could mix the 2 & still cause no problems... most brands offer a "blend" oil which is part synth & part conventional. if you heard that changing/mixing will hurt something that is a myth & totally untrue.

normal oils are not more expensive than synthetics, for any common brand the synthetic will always be more expensive... you can buy normal valvoline for example for about $3-4/qt, their full synthetic is $7-$8/qt.

as for the oil brand question... any name brand oil is perfectly fine for these engines or any non-race engine... its not like penzoil will harm the engine compared to mobil or castrol or quaker state etc etc. todays oils all meet certain minimum specs based on the API grade of sm or sn... they are all fine for toytota engines if you use the correct weight. even walmarts supertech brand is a very good oil proven by countless oil analysis.
 
Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w-30 with OEM Filter. Annual oil changes, since I don't put on over 5k miles a year.
 
Mobil 1 synthetic and mobile 1 filter. I’ve been using this combo for my last 4 cars I’ve owned, 4runner, 2 Tacoma’s and sequoia it’s been great. I’ve noticed everyone including this thread using OEM filter. I’m thinking of giving it a try the next go around.

I run commercial mowers and my current mower has a Kohler engine on it. It has been a super reliable motor, but it has had noisy lifters since day one. I usually ran Mobil 1 in it, but when I switched to the manufacturs brand oil (Kohler) the noisy lifters magically went away.

I know toyota v6s are notoriously whiney, so I thought maybe by switching oil brands I could smooth out this current whine. I am extremely particular about my vehicles, and I am certain a lot of folks would not even hear the whine (llike my wife). That is why I think it is internal, and maybe just a part of owning a Toyota v6. It very well could be something else, as I am no mechanic, but there are no leaks and everything has worked great so far on this rig.

Thats why I started this thread. I also think I will try the Toyota OEM filter next oil change. Does anyone have the Toyota part number or link to find on Amazon handy?
 
I get free oil changes currently and talked the service guy into using the Toyota 90915 longer filter. (the wife signed up for free oil changes and the service writer gave me the same deal).
