Yeah I know I know but laugh as much as you care, it's you smelling the burnt oil not me. HA!!HA!!HA!!

Now take your super tough TOYOTA to get it fixed. Then the wife can RED LINE it baby!!!!HA!! HA!! HA!!

i did, but they couldn't find anything wrong with it. like one of my friend was saying, maybe something is locking the diff. so the gear oil is heating up?

i am trying to narrow it down before i have time to bring it to dealer again.

my friend suggested me to lock the diff. drive very slowly (5-10 mph max) for 5-10 mins, then unlock it. that way we can check if the diff. is stuck or something? i may try it tonight when i get home.

Only if it's a soft surface:awais: The diff-lock/front diff/t-case will leak or not. Being in a locked mode will have no effect on smell.

Driving with the diff locked on a hard surface puts a lot of stress on the t-case and not recommended.

CJ3Flyr thanks for the reply...., i guess i'll wait til wife comes home later tonight and see if the smell getting worse or better.... i am trying to narrow down any possibility...

It's a OIL leak and it's at the engine I still feel a valve cover, and if the Dealers Service tinkers can't find it maybe you need to find someone who really understands engines, and they find this small leak and fix it.:bash:

lawwailok, did you ever figure this oil smell out?

I get this same smell. Usually when it's been snowing and I go to my inlaws so the AWD is at work (just guessing here). It's about a 10 minute drive at 80km/h (50mph). I get out and can smell burnt oil, very similar to you by the sounds of it.

I don't notice it for small around the town drives, more on the longer and at a higher speed than in town.

I'd be curious to know if you figured something out.

conclusion, i only had that weird smell when the first time i had diff. lock and 4Lo engaged and off road for the whole morning.
smell went away after a week, then the 2nd time off road, i don't smell anything now.
so i guess my friend was right, since first time engaged 4Lo, lock diff., the oil has to break in and of course, first time, i didn't have all the mud cleaned underneath well, so that's probably oil smell plus mud smell in my case.

but after the 2nd time off road, right afterward, i spent 2.5 hours to power wash the whole truck, mainly the bottom part and that was fine, no smell.

Weird. Well mine is just in the auto mode (not low or center diff locked). I don't take this one 4x4'ing (have my 96 for that) so bottom is clean. Not sure what to think anymore.

Then again, being that we've had winter conditions for 3 months now, I wonder if there's a build up of snow/slush under there just from road driving that would do the same? Hard to look being -15 celcius and lots of snow down but next time I'm in the car wash I'll try to spray things down real good under there. See if that makes a difference.

Glad to hear yours was an easy fix and worked out for you.
