Oil Catch Can

I'm honestly on the fence about this... I thought about installing one; but most are for boosted applications where there is more pressure in the system. But as the thread shows there is an amount of oil going back into the intake... but its no where near as bad as some of the European vehicles I have seen.

I'd be curious to see how this thread goes.
 
Well we haven't heard of "gunked" intakes on these rigs. The V6's seem to be filling the cans... If anything maybe this would be good on the V8's 25% more places to mist out oil?
 


Did the home depot husky catch can for $12 about 40k ago. It definitely catches oil and stops it from entering the manifold.

Me too, Ive seen these years ago, and I remember I guy I use to wheel with (very honest/good guy) had one on his rig, and worked well for him, yet you all know how the forums are, they bashed him, called him a liar etc, he finally got sick of it lol.

Sorry no write up. You just need a husky air compressor filter in the tool section of home depot. 2 1/4ntp to 3/8 fittings from plumbing section home depot. 4 ft of 3/8 hose auto zone. If you let it fill all the way, the ventilation pipe on the intake side (passenger side valve cover) will suck in lots of oil and will have blue smoke show under load.
 
If running open atmosphere you can hook both valve covers up to the can but if running PCV, passenger side vent should not go to the can.

Maybe its because its late at night and my brain is shutting down, but what reasoning do you have for this?

Not sure about the 2UZ but the 1GR stock pcv is on the drivers side valve cover and connects to the intake manifold creating vacuum in crankcase. The passenger side vent hooked to the intake post filter pre throttle body is there to equalize the vacuum created by the pcv.
 


About 600 miles on this dump. Catches about 3 ounces per 1000 miles and at my 5k oil change I am about a quart low. I can feel the motor running smoother with no oil in the charge. Great mod and still emissons legal depending on how you hook it up.

You guys are right, I thought about it the next morning when my brain was functioning and not turned off and I remembered the routing diagram. :becky:

FWIW, I'm a Liberty CRD (turbo diesel) owner who runs a Pro Vent (catch can system) on my rig.

Why? Because the CCV tube is routed straight back into the intake side of the turbo--this causes all that oily mist leaving the crank case to be sent back through the turbo, into the intake manifold where it gunks up said manifold and specifically the MAP sensor on this engine. When I bought my (used) rig and pulled the sensor after 46K previous miles, it looked like someone dipped it in tar. Yuk.

The Pro Vent routes these gases into a condenser element where it can be drained with a petcock valve and the scrubbed gases can be sent back through the engine to keep our LA air nice and oxide-of-nitrogen free.

Does it work? Hell yeah--I pulled my MAP sensor a few weeks ago after 50K miles and it was clean and dry.

A diesel is a high compression engine so we have lots of blow-by compared to a gasser, but I'm curious--why not run this system on any internal combustion engine and keep your intake manifold sparkly clean? There's gotta be some blow-by to worry about...right?

Sold the G35 and moved the catch can over into the 4Runner for kicks. Ebay unit with 3/8" fuel line from the auto parts store.

Mounted it on the driver side fender area.

Last picture is with 4 days of short driving, less than 80 miles. A lot of water condensation with some oil. Curious how much of the condensation is due to winter temps and my short drives. Will probably have to empty it out weekly at this rate.

I've run a catch can on many other cars both boosted and N/A. All applications have proven to work in my case. I was just curious because I see all the applications for our rigs only on the 1GR, but nothing for the 2UZ.

Has anyone put one on the 2UZ? Pics would be nice to see for either.

Has anyone living in an area that requires emissions testing installed a catch can? If so, any issues passing?

Obviously you could just reinstall the stock setup for testing but unless I’m misunderstanding this, the engine should burn more cleanly if anything.

Adding a can won't hurt emissions.

Have you compared the style you bought to the more typical ones like this?

I have been going back and forth on which I want to go with. Also, have you had any issues with the mount on yours?

The key is getting 1 that has built in baffles of some sort. The mounts are flimsy. Twist it with too much hand torque, and they bend.

For our 4.0's, you also want one with the biggest capacity you can fit in. I ended up taking mine off for this reason. It was 3/4 full with a week of driving. Was turning into a weekly emptying so it wouldn't back flow into the intake. Wasn't so much of a problem of seeing blow by in the can, was more of condensation for me.

I became paranoid every time the wife or someone else drove the rig and I'd worry if the catch can was emptied 1st or not. Figure the 4.0 made it this far before I threw one on. It can go much further with me taking it back off.

Wow, that's an absurd amount of water. That would help explain why the oil cap always has a milkshake on the bottom of it even though I don't burn coolant or anything like that. I always just assumed it was because the neck was so long. I have a can on-hand now but have been waiting to install it because the holes on mine were drilled and tapped too deep. Now that I know that it fills that fast, I'm not sure I want to install it either. Where do you live that has that high of humidity, if you don't mind me asking?
