Oil change analysis 04 V8

OCA after 5 months 7300 miles, lots of highway, some heavy towing. Hope you can see the file. Looks like pretty good results. Sample date was actually 10/20 not 6/20.

Nice. Less oil changes equals better for mother earth. A 9500 oil interval is great. I have an 04, and immediately switched to full synthetic and went to a 7500 oil interval. Seeing this makes me consider 10k.

Also makes you see how newer engines, when designed, can absolutely go 15k intervals.

Sucks for the lube places than keep wanting to trick everyone into a 1960's 3k interval.

oil companies say 3K to make $$
Car Manufacture companies say 7K to make money

Mechanics that tear down engine can attest that 3K engines are cleaner and less wear than 7K engines

Good post OP!

I use the exact same oil and from what everything I've read about the Toyota 4.7 V8...

It's an engine that is very 'easy' on oil.

The Pennzoil Platinum oil is a very robust oil and the additive package is solid. I am also running this oil and in my v6. My Blackstone results at 5k miles were excellent. They also suggested I try 6500 miles as my next OCI. For me the oil is cheap enough that I change it around 5-5.5k miles for peace of mind. But I would have no issues pushing this oil to a 7500 OCI based on my test samples.

Well, the problem with longer change intervals is that hardly no one checks their oil level anymore.

What is the industry norm...the use of 1qt of oil per 1000miles is normal?

If that is the case, someone who never checks their oil level will run out of oil by the 7500 mile mark...theoretically.

A shop in SF has some good articles about this and even some experience with their customers.

FAQ Whitepaper

But the moral of the story...which ever interval you use...OPEN YOUR HOOD AND CHECK THAT DAMN OIL LEVEL!

Thanks for posting this. It proves my point that the 3,000 mile interval Mobil 1 only people are literally throwing cash down the drain.

What's your interval if you don't mind me asking?

I started using Pennzoil Platinum about the 6-7K mileage after break-in.

Since then, and being that I'm on an extended warranty, I change oil and filter every six months or 7500 miles.

No added oil between changes, just the Platinum 5W-30 and a good filter like a Pure One.

It is the opinion of many who think the 4.7 V8 engine is in the classic status of Toyota engines... much like the venerable 22R.

Thank you for that because up till now it's been dyno oil for me.. Was kind of hesitant on using synthetic but sounds like it'll be okay..
Thanks again.

I'll have to do an analysis at about 10/15k with the Amsoil Signature Synthetic I am using, they're saying it will last until 25k under normal use and 15k under "severe" conditions (though both are withing 1year according to them).

This is also kind of cool... Its from Amsoil's Website on the Amsoil Signature Synthetic oil, they say its "3rd Party" so take that with a grain of salt... but Amsoil's a damn good company so I have little reason to believe they'd out right lie about their product when it tends to speak for itself.

On my 2012 BMW 550i the manufacturer has the first recommended service at 15k miles. I didnt trust that so I had my first oil change at 1000 miles, and then every 10k ever since.

Full Syn everytime on all other vehicles!

The Pennzoil platinum detergent package is great. If there any crap buildup in the engine it will clean a lot of it out within a couple oil changes. When I spoke with the Shell chemical engineer he suggested using the Pennzoil platinum for 3k OCI for the first change after to going to Pennzoil platinum then going to 5k OCI. At that point sending a sample to Blackstone for testing to determine the best OCI.

A guy I work with does the Amsoil 20-25k mile oil change thing on his 2008 Silverado - or maybe he does it yearly. Can't remember.

But I do know he had to have his engine rebuilt a couple of years back. Got it done while it was in the driveline warranty period.

Was it due to lack of oil changes? Due to a bad motor to begin with? I don't know, but I'm not too cheap to skip changing my oil every 5k-7k miles. :) Purely anecdotal of course. And Amsoil is a great oil, but the risk/reward ratio just doesn't convince me to skip oil changes.

If the oil was the cause I thin Amsoil has a warranty form on their website (a little late for that now, but they do stand by it and state "Gaurenteed" on the bottle.)

I personally will probably change the oil around 10k-15k and send a sample in to verify how well the oil is holding up in my engine, I personally feel I am pretty rough on the 4Runner vs. most people.

Yeah. He got it rebuilt under GM's warranty. Don't recall all the details and he's not around at the moment.

He swears by those extended OCI's though. Plenty of people do it.

Just thinking about running 10, 12, 15k miles before an oil change makes me shudder. :)

If I went 15k miles the oil would be in the engine for over 4 years. I only put on about 4k miles a year on my 4runner any more. I only use it around town and for off roading in the desert plus the trips to the trails. I change the oil approx. every 6 months because of the short trips and dust in the desert. I just use regular Penzoil with Toyota filters. My 4runner has 72k miles now and my 4.7 uses zero oil. I am retired so the 4runner just sets in the garage 98% of the time since it is not my main vehicle anymore. I do not think I would leave any oil in an engine over one year.

Oil technology has made huge leaps and bounds so its not hard to believe top companies like Amsoil are willing to stand by their product like that. I too am skeptical of such a high OCI claim, but they do their research and homework, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't too.

Like I said, I'm going to get a sample when I hit 10k on my oil and send it in to have it analyzed, if they say I'm changing too early then that's good enough for me combined with Amsoil's data. But you're right all vehicles are different and even Amsoil says "Severe" driving results in a gaurenteed 15k OCI vs. their normal 25k advertised on the bottle. Not to mention they still say "1 year OR 25k which ever comes first" so there's still a concern about the oil aging.

I wouldn't get an oil analysis at 5k miles and based on it make a determination that you can drastically extend your oil change interval. Too many factors and variables between each oil change. You could do an analysis 5 oil changes in a row and get 5 different reports...each recommending a different oil change interval.

Engine oil analysis are good for ONLY that oil change. Engines age...and as they age other things wear out. You also may not drive the same or have have the same commute between each oil change..

Recommended oil change intervals are determined to give you the best of keeping the engine in good condition over many years and at the same time not having you to change your oil too often.

Are you trying to extend the life of the oil...or extend the life of the engine???
