Ok, so I'm think cars just won't ever be my thing, but I'm just trying to be able to do some basic maintenance....
So I attempted to change my oil and I thought I was doing everything correctly, but I'm in quite a spot now. I drained my current oil, which was filthy despite still being only 2500mi into my last oil change. I left the drain plug out and pour 5qts of some Dino oil I bought just to try to get out any extra gunk and dirt, etc... I didn't watch the drain the entire time but do remember thinking it took longer when I drained the older oil. I put the drain plug back in and change the filter and put in 5.5qts of synthetic stuff I spent the extra cash on.
My dipstick says I am wildly overfull but I shouldn't be at all. To make matters worse, before I can figure out what is going on I need to move the car to get at my snowlblower. When I start to move the car it seems like it is struggling and I need to give it more gas than I should to get it in reverse and moving. I get out of the garage and see smoke coming from the exhaust and turn the car off immediately. I see oil dripping and I open the hood and I can see oil has spit itself out of the dipstick and made a little bit of a mess, but not terrible. Oil in the alternator doesn't look great, but there isn't that much of it and I was able to get a bunch up with a rag. I grab my drain pan and can tell it doesn't have 10qts in it, put it under the car and pull the oil drain plug. Nothing comes out, the oil pan is empty but I think there is over 6qts in my crankcase.
Double checked I am using the correct filter, inspected the changed one, it had some dirty oil in it, but nothing else I could notice. I put another new filter on as I dropped that one in the snow face down, but haven't start the car since.
I've done some searching and have found some terrifying stuff about what can happen when you overfil your oil and run it too long, as well as some horror stories about people driving with no oil. But nothing seems to fit my situation.
I'm going to call and get it towed tomorrow and get a pro to take a look, but I've gone over my steps repeatedly and have no idea what I did to make the dipstick overful and the pan empty. I was pretty meticulous about making sure the foil wrapper was totally off of the oil jugs I used, but I feel like the only thing is that I somehow clogged the oil flow, but feel like that is a long-shot.
Any ideas what I might have done / what kind of shape I'm in here?
