So how much was it? Reg oil vs synthetic $$?
Am I looking at a $19.99-29.99 oil change for regular or what? Do these T4R need special oil changes?

First DIY oil change on the Runner

Just changed my oil at a little over 10k, oil looked fine to me(M1 Syn)...pretty dark but that's to be expected I suppose. Used a Fram filter because that's all I could get on base, I'll probably swap that out with Toyota OEM or Amsoil in the future sometime but I'm not really worried about it. Skid plate is still off because it got dark out and my maglight was acting up on me. Full driveshaft lube, brake inspection, and skid plate install on the list for tomorrow;):

I change every 5000 miles with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 and a Toyota filter. My last V6 toyota engine was traded at 152,000 miles and it got 5000 mile changes it's entire life. It had no sludge and used 1/3 quart of oil in a 5000 oil change interval. So, I am convinced that 5000 miles is optimal. I am certain that engine will go 300k if the new owner follows the 5000 schedule and uses quality oil. I really only traded it because I got a 4cyl Rav4 for my daughter.

I know this thread is pretty old but I was looking in the manual and trying to look for the recommended oil change level and can't find where they say when you should change the oil. So where exactly does it say that it recommends you to change at 7000?

What generation 4runner do you have???

It is no where in the large manual for the 4th gens, It is in one of the smaller handbooks labeled "maintenance passport" or something like that.

The 4th gens are 5000 miles. No where does it say 7000 miles.

I have a 4th gen 4runner, 04 to be exact. I bought the car used to all I have is the owner's manual and I guess I dont have the handbooks that you were talking about. I was just looking for the 5000 miles part.

When I started this thread, I was talking about the 3rd generation model. My 2001 has a recommenation of 7,500 miles. My 2004 is 5,000 miles.

Another thing I didn't include is what type of oil do you use. I go a little further with synthetic oil than conventional oil. So, I would say, use this thread as a guide, there are many variable to take into consideration.

5,000 miles looks like the one most people use, sythetic or conventional. I do wonder about those 7 members who never change their oil, maybe they can post their VIN number on this thread, so we can be sure to check it when we buy a used 4Runner, just to be sure we are not buying those. ;):

im at 8k in my last mobil 1 oil change, and its barely turning black, changing this oil in the afternoon, bought the wrong filter at walmart, got the m1302 instead of the m1102, now i have to go to kragen and spend 15 for it as suppose to 7.50-8bucks at walmart. but gona return that filter this coming weekend. unless someone wants to buy it? its a mobil 1 m1302 filter.

gona buy the m1205 since its longer, hopefully itll fit the 4.0 v6, i knoe they all work for 3.4 , i also heard that the 1995 3.0 ford tarus filter works too, i knoe it does for the 3.4 so this should be a better filter replacement?

The V8 is one of the lightest on oil he has ever seen. Even on dino oil after 5k its still golden in color. Analysis says that even on a V8 with 150k+ miles oil analysis is comparable to that of a new one.

Ford says that there engines even when new can burn up to 1qt of oil every 1k miles and that it is "normal". The V8 doesn't even burn one drop at 150k+ with regular changes.

I usually do every 3k in the winter and every 5k in the summer. Looking at the oil after that mileage its not even brown.

Does this pertain to the V6 as well? Can the V6 go for 5k miles in the summer time as well for how many months? Is it safe to do some? What happens for those who doesn't drive that much or don't drive even 3K miles in 3months? what do suggest? thanks

I suggest using synthetic if you often take short trips or dont drive that much as you stated. Synthetic will still perform even if not at operating temp which rarely happens on short drives.

Im going 5k in the summer on dealer oil becuase:

I do 700 miles a week.
The V8 is SUPER easy on oil - like I said, its golden brown at best after 5k. I am not so sure about the V6.

They recommend oil change every 6 months(i think) if you dont drive at least 3k in that time period.

I am averaging 3-4,000 miles a year. I try to get in 2-3 times a year for my free oil changes. Wonder about that.

10,000 miles since April. Did a second interval, recently.
It's a good balance for an every 5,000 mile interval I think.

oil analysis

I would do a oil analysis to find your oil change intervial.
I have only owned my 4runner for 2 months so no test yet.
I did do this on my other car at 7500 miles on syn oil. the test said I could go longer. I had an amsoil filter on the car and the test said it was doing a very good job.
