Oil Change Interval Poll

I did 10k when I was strictly dailying it, but since I started wheeling I’ve gone down to 5k intervals.

I’ve never had issues with 10k intervals and have always stuck with that.

10k intervals using TMO 0w20 until recently. Now doing it at 7.5k intervals with 167k on the odometer. Runs like it did when it was brand new.

Every 5k miles. I have it lined up with every 5k on the odometer. I bought it in January with 50,000 miles and just crossed 60,000. With a couple road trips planned soon I’m thinking I’ll be close to 15,000 miles on the year. I do drive it somewhat hard.

179000 and a steady diet of Mobil 1 0w-20 extended performance every 10k. A few 15k intervals when I was doing a lot more miles per month. I'm back to 10k intervals now that I'm driving less.

I can remember multiples of 5 easily... but since I'm in Canada, I do the oil-changes every 5,000km. Thats like 3,000 miles.

Clearly, I'm on the conservative side of things in this thread :-O But I also grease all 6 driveshaft zerks while I'm in there, and all 6 JBA upper-control zerks too. Sold my last 4x4 at 20yrs of age to a student, and it's still going strong... I have high hopes of getting 30yrs from my 4runner :whoo:

I did about a decade of 3000 mile changes on other vehicles but when I started driving over 600 miles a week, I switched to synthetic and 5K changes. Every 10K is a tire rotation so that's easy. I've never gotten rid of a vehicle with less than 200K on it. I figure someone else can enjoy the golden years...

10,000 miles per Toyota? My truck yells at me at 5,000 and that's generally when I do it. Changing my oil has to do more with tire rotation and alignment than the actual oil life.

Nah, that's just to go get your floor mats checked .

For me, 10K interval +/- a couple hundred. Coming up on 52K miles on a 2020...

If you read your manual the recommended oil change depends on how you use your 4Runner. If it primarily a commuter car where most of the driving is highway it recommends 10k. If most of the driving is in the city or locally it recommends 7.5k. If you do a lot of towing it recommends 5k. I think the reason many people, like The Car Care Nut suggest changing every 5,000 miles is it simply takes all the guess work out and ensures your oil is in optimal condition.

For me I do it every 5k. My tire shop does oil changes so I have it changed there and get my tires balanced, rotated and recheck my alignment. An alignment runs about $120-$125 in my area but many tire shops are now offering unlimited 5 year alignment’s for about $190 which I did. So now when I take it in I get everything done at once. Makes it easier to keep track of things.

Oh and I’m sure most of you already know that most tire shops offer you free rotation and balance for the life of the tires when you buy the tires from them but many do not do oil changes or alignments. If you’re looking for the convenience of having you oil changed and tired rotated and alignment done all at once it may be something you want to consider when buying new tires in the future.

I was changing mine every 10k, but the oil seemed a little dark, so I've since switched to every 5-6k. Not a huge difference going to the shorter interval, but drive a good bit on forest service roads so figured it couldn't hurt. 125k on my '14

Plain and simple

Number one reason for oil change....contaminants. Contaminants in the oil is the main reason conventional oils were swapped out at 3000miles, as well as blended oils at 3000miles and full synthetic at 5000....no later. Look at the oil at 5000, its DARK brown to black. Cars are expensive enough, why get lazy and fooled into thinking 10,000miles is a-ok...it's not and it's pay back will hit you in your wallet.
I do my own oil changes on my 18 4Rnr, and my sons 07 4Rnr. I installed the Valvo Max oil drain system on both. Super easy and no spills. The only issue is my 18 with that stupid, stupid oil cartridge system, what a stupid design and major pain in the ass to deal with. The 07 4Rnr is sooooo easy in comparision.

None of the above. I go by time. Every 6 months regardless of mileage as per the severe service maintenance schedule.

I only have 2K miles on mine right now but I plan on doing oil/filter changes every 5K miles. It’s relatively cheap insurance and I’ll do a 5 tire rotation at the same time.

I’ve got 22,000 miles on my 2022 and I’m doing oil changes every 5000, which amounts to about once per quarter. Using full synthetic each time. As it’s been said before, cheap insurance, to help the Toyota last forever.

My 2023 is finally at 5,000 miles. I don't like that the gauge cluster throws up an "Oil Maintenance Required" message; that wording flies in the face of the stated maintenance schedule. Resetting it myself despite not doing an oil change makes you feel like you're doing something wrong.

Probably Toyota hasn't reprogrammed it since 2010 .

2014 TR4 SR5 ownere...

from 0-100k miles...i performed the oil changes in the 10K schedule
since 100k+ i perform it evern 5k-5.5k...depending on weather

seems to work just fine for me....pushing 165,000 miles of troublefree daily driving, towing, and off roading...

but i do basically park the truck from April to Sept. and ride my motorcycle daily.

the services reminder on the dash can be programmed to whatever miles you like.
just go to settings, vehicle, maintenance , oil 1-99999 miles.
there are bunch of other and personal items you can set up yoo.
most dealer set them at 5000 on pre delivery inspection so they expect to see you every 5000 miles...
