Oil change procedure for 2UZ-FE V8

Last night did my first oil change since I bought my 04 4Runner V8 and oh boy was that ever easy. Took me an hour including a clean-up, lubing propeller shaft, taking pictures and a couple of beers
I know V6 is a cake to do oil change but I think on V8 the only difference is a oil filter location where you have to remove 4 (12 mm socket) bolts holding a thick steel guard panel.
I dicided to switch to synthetic Mobil 1 5-30 engine oil, I think my truck will thank me for that in a long run. Previous owner meticulously serviced vechicle at local stealership and they use regular Toyota mineral stuff. After driving 10,000 km (6,200 miles) oil was dirty, this kind of interval for synthetic is fine.
Manual says 6.2 L (quarts) for oil change with filter. I got big jug (4.4 L) and a 2 small 1 L ones. $9 for a genuine Toyota oil filter and a drain plug washer. Save yourself some coin doing it yourself and have peice of mind. I dont trust qick lube places specially after they screwed up my buddy's truck Cummins diesel engine by not tightening drain plug.

After droping a cover plate, slide an oil collecting reservoir and remove oil drain plug.

Use new washer on a plug

Torque specs for drain plug are 29 ft/lbs and 39 n/m
Clean area around oil filter and remove it.

Slide a new filter in place, and pour some synth in there

Done. Dont forget to properly dispose used oil, I just take it to quick lube place and leave it there in jugs
Enjoy your ride for next 6,000 miles or so

Thanks for sharing! That would be nice when you can avoid re-torquing drain plug every time. Have to order one for next oil change

Just curious, the little sticker on the oil filter box. Is that a seal thingy to try and separate genuine from counterfit? Or is that some Canadian tax sticker? Goofy question I know....

i got one too early on... makes changing oil a lot less messier but it takes a bit longer for all the oil to drain out. at least i dont have to worry about getting a new washer and bolt and wearing out the thread.

It must be counterfit protection of some sort. And I dont think this a Canada specific only, US bound filters probably have it as well

All you need is a grease gun, some Mobil 1 grease and less than half hour of your time. I dont even use ramps or anything to lift my truck, I just crawl under and have enough room to do them all. Very easy and recommended to do every oil change (or every second oil change depending on your interval)

Inspired by paraordnance, I changed my oil today, and with further inspiration by pickerdd, added a Fumoto. Here's my 2 cents:

Front skidplate bolts

Rear skidplate bolts

Skidplate off. Note oil filter.

Location of drain plug
There is an oval cutout in the rear skidplate so no need to remove it.
(a little hard to see in the photo)
The cover to mine is missing so there was no need to remove it. One wonders if it is really necessary.

Fumoto valve installed

Filling with Toyota Oil
I was told it is ESSO.

Notes:
-one skidplate bolt was almost completely seized.
-front of skidplate is hinged.
-remove front bolts first.
-make sure to clean the rust off the bolts and coat with oil prior to reinstalling the skidplate.
-don't fully tighten all 4 bolts until it's all lined up.
-oil filter was a little difficult. Clean it off a bit, get a good grip and "give 'er" (eventually it should budge.) If it doesn't then you may need a filter tool.
-wear rubber gloves. I didn't and it was quite messy. Hopefully with the Fumoto it won't be as bad.
-put a big piece of corrugated cardboard under your work area to make it comfortable and keep your floor clean.

I used bio-synthetic G-oil because it was essentially the same price as Mobil-1 and they were hyping it on "Two Guys Garage" one episode.

I bought one to put on my runner, but i also bought a diff brand for my beater, the oil drained so slowly i threw the damn thing in the garbage and went back to reg plug. have yet to try the Fumoto brand on the runner. How long does it take for your oil to drain?

OP, you should think about Mobile1 0w30 next time, since your'e in Canada and all. I use it in my runner. Better start up protection, which is when most engine ware happens. 0w30 flows at the same rate at cold as conventional 5w30 does hot.

Just changed the oil yesterday. It drained for about 5 minutes I think, then I just let it continue to drip for about 1/2 hour while I went for a coffee. I had the engine nice and hot.

Definitely not as fast but sure makes it less cleanup as I am not lifting the vehicle.

On the topic of oil changes, anyone know where to buy a filter remover with a 1/2 or 3/8 socket? Seems the 4runner size is very hard to find.
