Oil cooler....

I was thumbing through the FSM today and came across this. It doesn't seem like it could be super effective, but I guess I could be wrong. I didn't realize the 3.4 had an oil cooler on it.

The 3.4s do last a rather long time with even average maintenance - the oil cooler could be part of that equation. The oil cooler can't hurt but yeah without engineer's documents we don't really know Exactly how effective it is.

On my 97 I changed out the seals to my oil cooler. The coolant lines inside the cooler were clogged pretty badly with sediment probably from the radiator that I had replaced previously. I imagine that it was much more effective after I cleaned it out.

What do you need to get out of the way to access it? i.e. is it a job to do alongside timing belt job?

You don't need to get anything out of the way...except skid plates maybe.

Timing belt is on the front, the oil cooler is on driver side.

Honestly, unless you're having oil temp problems or if it is leaking I would not worry about it. The only thing you have to do is remove a couple of hoses via hose clamps. This may help:
