Oil filter cap stuck

Amazon has the Toyota aluminum oil filter cap for $30. It was $20 a couple weeks when I bought it.

It was a bit tricky for me to change the tall stack/tube to the aluminum cap.

When installing, I put some anti seize on the aluminum threads.

And I like this tool from ebay. Not for use with impact wrenches.

It doesn't slip.

Mine was dealer serviced until I did first oil change. Only three over tightened skid plate bolts that broke and needed to be extracted. One on the radiator support and two in the skid plate where the plastic radiator cover attaches.

For those who can’t wait for Amazon, I found the Dorman filter housing listed above at Napa but Advances Autoparts had it too in a neighboring town. Napa also had an aluminum tool like picture above for around $32. I’ll report back on all these items tomorrow when I finish the job. It’s not Toyota brand, which I prefer, but may work just fine if you’re in a pinch.

So I finished my seized stock oil filter housing job today. The oil filter cap I bought from NAPA worked like a charm but man was the stock plastic cap on there. It’s bizarre since I’m the one who wrenched it last time, leading me to believe the plastic may have swelled. I have explanation beyond that.

I ended using the Dorman housing I listed a few posts back. I also swapped the inner element as suggested here and by the Toyota tech I spoke with. Just pull the center tabs up so it will rotate. Then push down and turn counterclockwise. Reverse for installation in the Dorman housing and push the tabs back down to prevent rotation.

I know the Dorman isn’t a Toyota piece, but the quality appears acceptable and I have no qualms about giving it a go. I could have tried the stock housing again but I wasn’t super confident doing so after it stuck. Either way, the NAPA tool worked perfectly and was in stock.
