If you don't pull the skid plate, the oil will drain all over the front diff when you pull the filter. You're better off pulling the skid plate and placing a rag over the front diff when you spin off the filter. My personal opinion of course.

lol...I removed the skidplate and still got oil EVERYWHERE! next time i'll try to remember the rag!
Install a BL and it will be easier to access through the wheel well:horn:
Been doing it through the wheel well for 17 years. One of those cap-type wrenches that goes on the end of a 3/8" extension makes it easy. Let the oil drain first and let it sit a while.
I usually break it loose, then cover it with a plastic Ziploc bag to catch the oil as well as the filter when it's fully unscrewed. No cleanup required!
