oil filter change

okay....anyone change their oil filter without dropping the skidplate? I can touch it......'97 4wd

If you don't pull the skid plate, the oil will drain all over the front diff when you pull the filter. You're better off pulling the skid plate and placing a rag over the front diff when you spin off the filter. My personal opinion of course.

lol...I removed the skidplate and still got oil EVERYWHERE! next time i'll try to remember the rag!

I just went out and looked at mine......sure enough you fold back the rubber flap and you're looking right at it!:high5:

easiest way I have found to change filter is thru the drivers side wheel weld. you can reach it easily, but yeah, still usually have to spray the skid plate off. lol

Been doing it through the wheel well for 17 years. One of those cap-type wrenches that goes on the end of a 3/8" extension makes it easy. Let the oil drain first and let it sit a while.

I just reach down and fish my hand behind the alternator to get it off. I place a few rags under the filter, on the diff and skid plate to catch any drips.

All the skid plates ever did for me was make it a pain in the arse to change oil. Needless to say they never went back on on both I had/have

I never remove my skid plate, it is a total PITA though and oil goes everywhere. My valve covers are leaking so there is already oil everywhere though...

I've gone through the wheel well every single time I've changed the oil in the 10+ years of ownership.


Sometimes I take the skidplates off, sometimes not. Just depends on how I feel I guess. But with an air ratchet, getting them off takes maybe a minute or two.

Allegedly you're supposed to unscrew it a little bit and let it drip back into the engine then finish unscrewing it and you can get it off without spilling any.

I'll have to try it soon. $15 rebate on Mobil 1 synthetic right now.

I usually break it loose, then cover it with a plastic Ziploc bag to catch the oil as well as the filter when it's fully unscrewed. No cleanup required!

Driver side wheel well, Turn wheels to right, remove flap, reach in with your face smushed against the fender, Channel your inner Hercules to summon enough strength to turn the filter. One of the easiest Oil changes I have ever done *sarcasm*.....:ybrick:

I use the same procedure with a 20" extension on the ratchet.
