Anyone know of any good posts for doing an oil filter relocation? I'm sick of making a mess every time I change my oil and have wanted to do this for some time. I'd like to put it somewhere protected but yet vertical so you can easily change it. Even if I have to cut a hole in the skids it would be better than the way it is now. I would also like to possibly use braided lines just for long term durability. Anyone have a parts list for what I'm looking for?

I had a problem with changing the filter too. I had to crawl under the truck to get to it. That bites. So I relocated the motor to an impala .
Now it is easy to get to.
On serious note. The oil filter is not that had to get to. Some cars have it down deep inside, under exhaust manifolds , behind splash shields and what not.
Mercedes and BMW have their oil filters accessible from the hood area. they can drain and change the oil with out even lifting the car.

I miss that pic; if that does not scream NC rural ingenuity right there I don't know what does. I will have to say I did see someone with a 350 engine in a steel wheelbarrow once off 17. No pic though.
I also forgot about the orange kiss of death on there as well.
If one has issues with the oil filter location, try changing one out on an Acura Vigor. One's hands will look like they have been in a bare knuckle boxing match when finished.

Ive never even thought of moving it, but its a good idea in the long run for those of us that actually change our own oil.... But there's one thing that I may see as a problem; since it would be going from the very bottom of the engine (see Singtoe's pic) to a higher position would there be a noticeable drop in Oil pressure? Extending the distance with a hose could also drop the pressure since the oil pump is designed for working without that extra line/height difference. Kind of like using a garden hose... if you have a short hose the water pressure is great but when you use a longer hose the water pressure will drop considerably.
Secondly, when the engine is off could the send/return lines drain back into the engine, causing a delay for the sending of oil into your engine. Since the pump would have to send the oil back up the empty send line, thought the filter, and back down the empty return line.
Don't want to sound like a downer, just my initial thoughts. :shrug:

If you decide to do it I have a new set of Permacool adapters, one for the engine side and another 90 degree mount for the filter I will sell cheap. No hoses but you can pick them up.

It's not really the location of the filter as much as the fact that its upside down so when you unscrew it, you get oil everywhere. Some places including walmart actually charge extra on this vehicle because they need to remove the skid plate. It's next to impossible to fill the filter before you put it on so it doesn't run dry when you start it.
As for the extra work on the pump, as long as you don't raise the filter more than a couple of inches it shouldn't be a problem. The anti-drainback valve in the filter should stop the oil from draining out of the lines when off.

BMW got it right, very easy to change the filter.

The idea of a remote filter mount would seam to worth it if you change your oil often.
But as mention earlier. The pressure drop from adding all the hoses and elbows might cause the oil light to come on while idling.
You add more week points in the system too. Oil hoses coming off, oil hoses rubbing on each other, more vernable oil filter location for damage to occur, more contaminated oil still left in the engine during the oil changes and maybe longer dry starts.
The only benefit I see that is worth anything is to add an oil cooler inline with the remote oil filter. But oil temps seam to always be in check so it is kind of useless to add one.
But each is to there own.

If you don't like getting oil everywhere, put come cardboard or something under the truck when you change the oil. Go get some kind of basin, or make something so you can pull the truck over it, and it'll catch the oil when it comes out of the filter.
There are solutions to everything. Why jump to the hardest thing you can do when you can just lay a big piece of cardboard down?
If youre b!tching about getting the filter off, use a swivel and a couple extensions, and one of those cup wrenches. Take the driver wheel off, and boom, there ya go. You can always go hard over to acess the filter too.
Otherwise, just take it somewhere and get it changed.

I've been changing the oil filter in mine for 13 years. Not much mess at all. I would worry that oil flow would be compromised more than I would enjoy the convenience.
Try a recent Hyundai Accent (son's car). It's in between the exhaust and the radiator. Virtual guarantee of 2nd degree burns if you don't let the engine cool off.

Is that a different engine? My 3.4 the end of the filter points up and even with the skid plate off its still buried...

You can just buy a remote filter kit and bolt it on. It won't really lower the pressure or cause problems. I mounted one on my Yamaha with an oil cooler too and it works great.

Yep got to pull the skidplate to drain the pan, but I figured something out: you can turn the wheel and reach the filter, SO: next time you do an oil change, simply hand tighten the ****e out of it wearing one of those cheap gloves with a bunch of little black rubber dots all over the palm side (don't forget to glisten the seal / rubber gasket w/ fresh oil) then removal will be as simple as wiping down with some good degreaser and using the same glove to remove it for the next oil change! I have done this five times now and have yet to develop a leak! Just keep an eye on it for the first few weeks to be sure. :guitar3:
