Oil Filter Size Question

Need a little help with something.

I did my oil change (5W-30 M1 Full Synthetic) and winter->all-season tire swapout on my runner yesterday. Everything went smoothly.

I pulled off the old filter and threaded the new one on. The new one was shorter by about an inch. Both are Mobil 1 filters.

Now, thinking on it, I seem to recall that when I did my oil change last year, I came across a forum posting that indicated that there was a bigger filter compatible with the 3rd-gen 4Runner. I'm pretty sure *that's* what I purchased a year ago. Unfortunately, I can't recall what the SKU was for the part. I'd like to know what the compatible oil filters are, particularly if anyone knows offhand what the oversize M1 part is. Mine's the 3.4L engine, 1999.

Well, maybe you were running the 4th gen v6 oil filter? That's what I run!

The stock filter ends in number YZZD1. The one for the 4th gen ends in YZZD3. It's a little bit taller but same diameter and thread. So next time pick out a mobil 1 for a 4th gen and compare it to the one for a 3rd gen and if it looks like it'll work then give it a shot.

I look for an oil filter for a 2005 Ford Taraus (sp?) with the regular 3.0 motor. Same diameter and threads as stock, but longer. I like running the bigger filter since I run longer oil change intervals using synthetic.

OEM Toyota filter 90915YZZD3.

Doesn't get much better than this. I use it without any problems. Order online or the dealer.

I use the motorcraft FL400s at Walmart. It's the same one I put on my Saturn. Makes it easy.

The correct Motorcraft number to use would be a FL 793.
But like others have said the FL 400S is longer in size. Plus the "S" stands for a Silicone valve in the filter, not your normal rubber one.

Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a prob with it seating.

It's been a while and I forget what it is supposed to be for, but it is a perfect fit and just a bit longer than the yzzd1 filter. I remove the skid plate when I do an oil change and I have no issue at all getting the filter on.

I'm sure if you google the part number or use the forum search thingy with that part number, you will see a few threads on it with pictures to give you a better idea of size.

I like them and I have no intentions of running any other type of filter on my truck.

I was replacing the alternator today and noticed that once the alternator and battery were removed—it was a good angle to see how the larger 90915YZZD3 oil filter sits. This should give anyone thinking about using the bigger filter a better idea of size and clearance.

Napa Gold 1516 works also. I "Think" it was for a Ford 150 back in the day... It's taller then stock.

I personally use the YZZD3 though. It fits perfectly and so does the Wix/Napa 1516.

You guys rock for handy info. We have had 3rd gens for years and I never knew this. It's handy now that we just picked up a sequoia because I can just get one filter type for both. Excellent.

I haven't looked them all up. I'm sure some are different. I've used several on the list and now I'm using Baldwin filters which are probably different again and I haven't experienced any issues.

If you are using Baldwin is stick with that. What number are you using. Baldwin is my filter of choice. But hard to get locally. Where I use to work our fleet of trucks used them. So I'd get them for me at cost. Not so anymore.

I'm using the BT223. It fits the 4runner, my taco and the wife's mazda 3. I got a case (12) of them for around $40 through my work.

That's a good price for the baldwins. I was paying 3.75 for a filter for my cummins.
