where would one pick up a oil filter wrench kit for 2000 toyota 4runner?

idk if a 00 is diff. from a 97, but there was no way i was gettin a pair of oil filter pliers in there... auto zone would be your best bet. id get one of the ones that goes on the bottom of the filter and just gives you extra grip...
Whatever you do, don't get one of those plastic ones. They are crap.
Have you tried either duct tape (wrap around the filter with the sticky side on the OUTSIDE.), jar opener (the sheet of rubber thing), or pair of gardening gloves (the knit cloth gloves with the rubber coating). All of those worked like a charm for me.

Another vote for the end-cap type. Different filters that fit the 4Runner may require different size end-caps. On my son's Hyundai, the NAPA, Purolator and factory filter all take different sizes.
My approach for all my cars: Go to my friendly NAPA guy and get a Gold series filter for the new car. NAPA filters are made by Wix and are generally considered pretty good. Take filter out of box and ask the guy to find an metal end-cap wrench that fits. If that wrench won't remove the factory filter, bash an old screwdriver through it to get it off if it won't come off by hand. Then install new NAPA filter. (Of course, by now I have a half-dozen of these end-caps, so usually I have the right size.)
