I noticed that the Toyota OEM filter is not the only filter that is offered for our 5th Gen.

Note: I have no idea of all of them supply the necessary plastic nipple and the o-rings.

In my past my experience was:

For Subarus you get the black OEM made in Japan filters.
For Honda S2000 you only use the Honda filter which is special designed for the s2000.
K&N filters HP series filters were very good (but I stuck with Honda OEM s2000 specific filter)
Fram sucked

am I spending too much time and going down the slippery slope of becoming a bobistheoilguy forum lurker?

I'm most curious about the K&N and the TRD filter. However it appears the K&N filter is not based on the HP filter elements but rather their more affordable line of PS (which has less filtering capability)

Yes, there are a lot of choices, but the OEM from Amazon is only $5 if you buy a case of 5. You can't beat that price and it is a quality filter.
 
I've used Wix filters for years - support my local full service parts store - recently bought one for my LE - $6. and some change. Did notice it was made in China - guess that's Wix 'worldwide'.
 
I mean, we haven't had issues with Toyota filters; they've always been on the upper tier of comparison tests (the 4th Gen & Tacoma sections of various forums have links to large swaths of filter testing to back this up.)

I would just stick with the Toyota stuff unless there's one that's significantly better than it (I am running Amsoil's alternative to Toyota's YZZD3 in my 2UZ-FE 4th Gen because it is just a hair better than the Toyota, which is already good, and they warranty the oil change if I use it.)

In that case... If the resident expert says Toyota OEM is good. Than it is good!

I wish you were closer to San Jose or Mountain View, I'd take it to your dealer and say only you could work on my 4runner.

I had a similar arrangement with my s2000 back in Toronto. The lead mech at the Honda dealership owned a s2000 as well. He and only he could touch my car. He loved s2000s too. Usually was never winter driven and didn't have to deal with rusted and seized bolts.

Also I buy my oil and filter just enough for the one job. That way I can have a receipt as proof of maintenance in the slim chance I need a huge warranty job. I can produce regular interval receipts as proof.

LoL, don't take my advice blindly. I am just saying from what I have seen they tend to be in the upper class of filter quality. I encourage everyone to do their own research and prove me wrong if they think I am spouting nonsense. :)
 
I also use Toyota filters exclusively except for the other day. My 5th gen needed the oil changed and I had realized I put the the oil filters in the Amazon cart but never bought them. With no Toyota dealers remotely close to me, I visited the local Walmart and Vatozone to check out the options. The Fram looked and felt like junk. I could imagine pieces of the cheesy plastic ends coming off and finding their way into the engine. I settled on the STP filter that looks similar to the Toyota filter. I know it's not the same quality but hopefully it will do until the next change.
 
I personally stick with the OEM filter since I haven't heard anything negative about them. Plus my local dealer gives them to me for about $5.60 each with a washer. Can't really complain.
