Oil filters

Like several others, I found out too late that Toyota's free maintenance will now have oil changes at 10K miles instead of the 5K norm. I decided to change my own and have not purchased an oil filter. Not wanting to drive back to the dealer, I found the Fram and also the STP brands at the local Autozone for about $6.00. From what I've read on the internet, both are equal. Anyone have an opinion? Thanks

I guess the first question is what is the problem with 10K mile oil changes? I think if it's the first one I'd change it early but I'm not sure there is a problem after that. I'm sure others will elaborate more one way or the other.

Also, I would not buy Fram. Bosch, Wix/Napa, Mobil, Purolator are all better filters. I'm not sure about the STP though I'd buy almost anything over Fram.

We just picked up our toyota 2 weeks ago and I asked this same question to my Dealer who game me this response. They will Do 5000 Mile service if its Not sysnthetic, If we wanted synthetic then its every 10000 miles. Which I guess is somewhat understandable with the cost difference. Anybody else hearing anything similar

The 4Runner comes with synthetic, and is designed to run full synthetic. You should be putting synthetic in it.

I will by changing my oil at most every 7500 miles since the "extreme conditions" interval (tow a trailer, off road, short trips, winter, etc.) is still 5000 miles.

My opinion is you should be using a Toyota filter and Toyota 0W20 oil. The OEM filters can be had for around $4 on the internet. 2nd option for me would be Mobil 1 and/or the highly rated PureONE Oil Filter. Fram's are not highly rated by the oil fanatics on BITOG

I do an oil change in my silverado every 7500 with synthetic and I will do the same for the Toyota. I should go back to the dealership and ask what there worthless 2 year maintence program is worth and get the money back.

Shearerman, Look at your oil fill cap. It will be marked 0-20w. ALL 4 Runners for 2010 were filled with the 0-20w synthetic. I brought mine in for the 5K service and learned of their new policy for 0-20w oil changes being extended to 10K miles. Not happy with running the initial oil fill for 10K miles, I am changing my own now. Next trip to the dealer at 10K. I will then start with the extreme conditions interval.

I'm no oil expert, but I plan to do an initial change at 3-5K and send that oil in for an analysis to blackstone labs and see what's happening with the oil. I'll also send in my second change, and their recommendation on oil interval by analysis is basically "spot on."
