Oil in TB and Intake Pendulum..

Diagram14

Just bought my 1st T4R and am going through it getting it in sound shape. There was a fair amount of oil in the air cleaner assembly/resonater and resting in the intake pendulum. The TB, visually, has been plagued by oil for sometime now without cleaning. Has anyone run across this and resolved it reasonably, and by that I mean cheap and proper? Ive heard PCV valve, but I pulled mine and did the shake test...it still rattled. Im assuming that the intermittent large puff of smoke at start up is directly related. Any advices would be appreciated.

The PCV valve is not the problem, its the route the oil takes to get to the intake. The PCV sucks air from the crankcase into the intake. The reason they have the shaking backflow preventor is to prevent a backfire from sending flames into the crankcase and blowing up the motor.
If you have a lot of ring blow-by the oil will get sucked back into the intake. The root cause is a worn engine and it is showing by traveling through the PCV.

How many miles are on your new truck ? Did you have it checked out by a good mechanic before buying it ?

I noticed the same thing on mine inside the intake manifold. I pulled the T-body off and saw a light amount of oily substance on the bottom of the manifold.

It looked like brand new super clean oil, so not sure what the deal was. I just wiped it up with a shop towel. I too thought it might have something to do with the PCV since mine appeared to be original with 163k on it. It was so brittle that it broke in pieces when I tried to remove it.

When I changed the oil 3k later it was still full so mine doesnt appear to burn anything.

With 160+k on my engine I'm sure its pretty worn. I figure if I can get another 30k (3years) out of it I'm cool.

The filter is stock and Im sitting at just over 167k miles. I had a pre-purchase inspection done by a reputable shop and no mention of ring blow-by was ever made. I only paid 3500 for the thing so I have some wiggle room. A shot engine just seems a little extreme, especially for a Toyota. I also just read a piece on Yotatech where a guy with the same issues found excessive sludge and related his problems to it messing with crank case pressure. Any thoughts?
