Oil leak after oil change

I had my oil changed on Thursday and noticed a small oil leak earlier today. I crawled down there and could tell it was not coming from the drain bolt. It is running down and dripping from the filter side.

I cleaned up the filter and drip and an unable to find a leak around the filter. Any ideas? It did not leak before the oil change. Thanks

Loose, cross-threaded or simply the wrong filter perhaps?

Or maybe just spilled oil that hadn't drained off yet.

Friday I changed the oil and filter in my 4Runner (2002). I noticed a leak yesterday. First time I have notice leaking oil.
I haven't had time to really check it out, however, it doesn't look like it is coming from the oil drain plug or the filter. I "looks" like it is coming from the rear of the engine.

I am going to get under it tomorrow and check it out further.

The 4Runner has 99,000 miles & I have been using Mobil 1 oil and filter for the past several years.

Do you have the second skid plate that runs down to the steering rack? This skid catches some oil during the filter removal and comes out from the rear of the engine area.

keep checking the oil level and the leak, like said before, it could be oil dripping down from spillage on the skid plate. Ive noticed this from my new to me 4runner and an oil change I did last week.
I do my own oil changes so I know mine is right, oddly enough, I can get a filter from the dealer cheaper than I can get something like a fram from the local big box auto stores, same with air filter. this was true of my corolla and now for my 4runner

Did you do the oil change or take it somewhere? Is the drain plug even tight? Gasket missing?

I changed my oil the other day and my driveway was filled with oil. Turns out I bought a Bosch 3300 filter instead of 3330. Live and learn i guess

I struggled with this for awhile with walmart filters (fram, wix, etc). It was completely random which filter would work and which would slightly drip.

I finally switched to OEM toyota filters. Not only are they cheaper, but they also never leak around the oring. No brainer.

It was. ;-)

It is impossible to change the oil on a 3rd gen without getting a quarter cup of oil on top of the skid plate. I started sticking rags under the oil filter and that helped.

My driveway is sloped so it would never fail to leave a trail of oil down the driveway when I backed out after an oil change, thus the rag trick.

Never said they were garbage, just had issues with the oring not sealing occasionally.

I always take the extra fifteen minutes to remove the under armor from my 4Runner when I change the oil. I can't stand spots on my driveway. I would never even think of allowing someone else to change my oil (or perform any other service except, perhaps, an alignment) as I am certain that they would not even think to take the time to do this.

I've also adopted a longer oil change interval using Mobil1 and a Wix filter. 7,500 miles between changes. I may go even longer with only a filter change and oil top-up, along with an extra driveline lube and tire rotation.

Right now the 7,500 mile interval works for all of this regular service.

I minimized the mess by draining the oil first then taking the filter after like 5 minutes. But yes oil drips for about a week from skid plate. I also buy my OEM filter from amazon.
