Oil Pan 1990... uh oh!!!!!

OK, so I bought a great looking older 4 runner. I'm in heaven!

Except for the fact that the oil pan is leaking like a faucet! The pan is not damaged it is a gasket/seal failure.

Would love to fix this myself.... but it looks like I might have to disconnect the differential and take the motor lose and jack it up....

Has anyone done this before??? and is it really gonna be that intensive of a project? am I just making this too hard? Would love some feeback if anyone has any....

I believe the rear engine seal is a common failure on 2nd generation 4runners. It could be leaking from there? Sorry, no idea of difficulty in replacing seals... Good luck.

Wow, I guess not. I would still like to try though. I mean, I did get it as a toy / project....

So no one has ever tried to replace oil pan gasket? Mostly just looking to find out if I was going to have to take the engine off the mounts and jack it up to do the job.

I don't know where people get all of these apparent problems with the 3.0's.
We (myself as well as parents) haven't had ANY of those or any of the other "common" problems. The truck's been in the family since brand new in '88 and has >300000KM. Maintenance is key. Just my $.02

And back on topic for this thread..... Unfortunately I can't say anything about the difficulty since I've never had to do it....

I don't know if you'll have to jack up the engine or not, but on a truck without any lift you're right about the front diff. It has to come out.

I had a 3" body lift on my truck when I did it and I chose to jack up the engine instead and just barely had enough room to get the pan out with the motor jacked up as far as I could get it.

I'm pretty sure Sydney posted the links to the FSM here. Find that thread and read the section on pulling the pan and it will detail dropping the front diff for you.
