Oil pan

i had a question to how tight the oil drain plug is supposed to be tightened to. toyota told me 28 ft lbs and now its stripped. Also ordered a new pan to install and was wondering if anybody has done a pan install. does anybody know toque setting on the pan bolts also? My 4 runner is bleeding right now in the driveway

Some auto parts stores will carry over size drain screws and they will cut new threads. I'd try this first before replacing the pan. Also, Toyota may carry something like this. Stripping out oil pan threads is nothing new.

You stripped it at 28 ft. lbs.??? Sounds odd, but then, I've been doing oil changes on over 15 different vehicles over the past 35 years and I don't think I ever used a torque wrench on a drain plug.

^ Yeah, torque wrench is overkill on the drain plug bolt, just get it goodntight with a normal length wrench and it should be right around the correct spec, easier too. I've always done it this way as well, and never had a problem either.

Torque specs for the engine oil drain plug in 2003-2009 T4Rs are 30 ft-lbs for the V6 and 29 ft-lbs for the V8.

Torque specs for the oil pan nuts/bolts differ for the V6 and the V8 - you don't state which one you have.

i have the v6 for the oil pan bolts toque question. and ya i guess im going to have to switch it up and not use a toque wrench. the car has 120k on it and i have done the oil on it for 2 years now idk what happened.

Tighten it 'til it strips, then back off a quarter turn. jk.

As an above poster stated, I would try an oversized drain plug first.

Dude: don't replace the oil pan. JB weld a fumoto valve in there and your problem is solved.

Yeah, I just snug it with a box end wrench. I probably do mine 8-10 ft lbs. never a leak in 4 Toyotas and almost 400,000 miles. :bluejump:
