Oil Requirements

New to the forum, just purchased a new 2014 4Runner. While signing the final paperwork, the guy told me the first 25,000 mile maintenance is on them. He also stated the oil would be changed every 10,000 miles with synthetic oil (theirs I think). After the free period was over, oil changes at the dealership would cost about $95.00. Whats up with that? Am I getting scammed? I know synthetic is good but is it required. If changed on a regular basis, is regular oil acceptable?

Do whatever the manual recommends. I think it calls for 0W20, which is only available in synthetic as far as I know. You can get 5 quarts of it at Walmart for about $22. Toyota 0W20 can be found for $5-8 per quart, I think. You could probably get by with 5W20 conventional, but 0W20 is better at startup temperatures or in the winter when the engine takes a long time to heat up. 0W20 gives you better protection and fuel economy on short trips.
