Oil top off ?

Just wondering how many of you have to top off your oil between oil changes?

I only had to add oil once when towing my camper on a long hall on a hot summer day and it was only a half a qt.

My dad ran his Ford van 460 v-8 for over 150,000 mi. and it used a quart or two every oil change since it was new.

i never worry about topping off as long as the oil level is in range, not even worried if it is below full.

There is another oil thread on this board that mentions that it is crucial to make sure that your oil is topped off. If I remember correctl the post was made my Thai. Hope that helps.

I have 20k miles and my truck does not use oil.

Never had to add any oil between maintenance/oil change intervals. Every time I check my dipstick (about once a week) the oil is always ever so slightly above the full mark. This is on my '05 SR5 with about 22k on it. I always check the filter seal too and for any other leaks too religiously. We'll see if it's the same on my new '07 SE. Although I always keep a quart handy in both trucks just in case.

I never had to add oil to my '90 4 cyl until I hit about the 150K mark. Have 193K now and add about 1/2 quart between changes. I always carry a quart in my vehicles, just in case.

The first two or three oil changes, it seems as though I had to add half a quart in 3,000 miles. The last two oil changes, however, did not require me to add any oil at all.


I also owned a Ford truck (302 V8) that used one quart every 3,000 miles from when it was brand new until I had 197,000 miles. To me, that is not too shabby and probably indicates that the oil is doing its job properly.

A mechanic who is an acquaintance of mine actually told me that any consumption up to one quart every 1,000 miles on most vehicles was "acceptable" to him. (On a new car, I would find that quite excessive!)

I'm the same w/ greasefingers...I stopped checking my oil after my 2nd oil change. I know it's 5.5qts for the V6. I change my oil at 3,000 miles & continue to enjoy the beast.

Well there's no harm in topping off but I've never had to with my 4runner (did with my Jeep) and I get an oil change every 5K miles.

Anyone know how much oil the space between the "full" and "add" markers on the dipstick represents?
