Oily dashboard?

Hello everyone,

I have a 2004 SR5 RWD V8 that I bought a few years ago. It now has 45,000 original miles. Everything is in good condition, no cracks anywhere, solid drivetrain and powertrain. Expertly well maintained.

The only thing I've now noticed is the dashboard has some sort of film that has appeard on it that seems to be oily and I can't seem to keep the dash clean. Perhaps the previous owner used some product that seeped into the dash material and is now seeping back out? Is it manufacturing chemicals in the dash product that is now seeping out? I don't know.

It's my understanding this year had dash cracking issues which mine does not have. Mine isn't dry it's the opposite - mine is over supple! Is this dashboard film issue common and is there a fix? I guess it could be on the surface and perhaps a cleaning product exists that you can recommend that will completely clean it without harm to the dash.

Lastly, what dash covers are available that have a custom fit and look nice that can enhance the dash appearance and protect it from the sun and heat.

I notice that on my 05 sometimes too. I personally live where UV is high and it’s common to find oily dashes because of it in a wide range of vehicles. The only remedy I’ve found for it is using some good interior detailer. I use Chemical Guys Total Interior cleaner as it purposely doesn’t leave a glossy finish, it completely dries. I’m sure there are many interior cleaners that do the same though. Then usually every couple months or so I go through with 303 Aerospace Protectant, this stuff protects your dash from sun damage and UV, it’s a pain in the butt to work with but does the job!

If I can get it clean to where the residue and stickiness is gone, is there such a thing as a vinyl sealer?

The dash "Warranty Enhancement" program not only covered a cracked dash but also a sticky and melting dash.

If you read the letter to dealers posted in the first post linked below in a topic from 2014 when the dash warranty was first announced it covers both issues.

I called Toyota at the number indicated on the letter posted in the thread linked above and this expired on 5-31-2017.

Yes that was the deadline to have your dash inspected at a Toyota dealership, if your dash met the requirements you were then place on a list and your new dash was ordered, Toyota had to make all the new dash replacements, once your dash arrived at the dealership they would call you to set an appointment to get it installed, in the beginning of the program some had to wait 1 1/2 to 2 years for their new dash because Toyota had to gear up to get them made, towards the end the wait was only a few months, I had my cracked dash inspected in 12-2016 and it was installed in early March 2017.

As long as you got the dash inspected by the deadline you were good to go, some of those late comers didn't get their dash installed until late 2017, and possibly some others after that.

I just discovered that Coverlay makes a custom dash cover I could buy if I can't get it clean or stay clean.

Anyone have experience using this?

I have an 05 and it gets tacky in the sun for sure. The inside of the windshield gets coated with a film very quickly in the summer. It's not enough to really bother me, I just make sure to not touch it.
