Okay, y'all - looking for mod advice...

Note the "bone stock" on my signature tag below. '01 SR5 with the 5-spoke rims, running boards, chrome/rubber fender guards and no hood scoop. I'm thinking about adding a few items to the truck and would *really appreciate* advice:

1) better lighting (both headlamp bulbs and adding fog/driving lamps into the factory lower-bumper location as I don't have the factory fogs). Saw what looked like a sweet PIAA setup on the 4X4 Wire forum and I'd wire them to a dash switch (or wand - I'm on the fence about that). Recommendations as to (legal) bulbs for the headlights that will last a long time and improve the (IMO wimpy) output? Any recommendations as to the driving/fogs from those who have done it?

2) Bug guard. It would seem that the front edge of the hood is a rock/bug magnet on this truck. I've seen the factory ones and they look good but I know there are aftermarket ones that people really like too (I don't know the brands). I'd be looking for one that has a nice contoured shape (read: I'm not trying to look like a mexican cab or Mack truck) and doesn't use adhesive (because I'd think that I'd like to take it off once a year when I have the truck fully detailed).

3) Horn upgrade. I think it's particularly weak on this truck. Recommendation as to air horn brands and placement?

I've done some speaker work which has helped the OEM setup tremendously. Would love to have an outside temp guage but have researched that already and I think I know what is involved. That's all I have in mind - the biggest off-road duty it sees is snow and some backwoods camping a couple of times a year so I don't need suspension mods or a snorkel, winch, shackles, etc like that (at this point, but sooner or later she's going to want a new truck and then BWAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA!!

>>>Check out recommendation on this site...

Then consider a trip to AUTOZONE and pick up a pair Sylvania Silver Star bulbs. (brighter than PIAAs and run about $20ea)
The 2001 4runner uses 9003s.

Foglight bulbs for the 2001 are:
Fog/Driving light
Part number = H3-55W
Upgrade Part Number = H3ST

>>>WEATHERTECH makes a decent one. Check www.mats.com (macniel products)...

On our Camry, I used Philips Vision Plus -- not available in the US, but you can order them from http://www.autolamps-online.com/index.htm . I ordered from this company and had the order in about a week's time (not bad shipping via air mail form the UK.)

These bulbs are supposed to be brighter than the US version of the Silver Stars, but they don't make them in all sizes.

Also, I understand that the European version of the Silver Star is slightly brighter than the US version, because they have a bit of a blue tint to them here, which costs a little brightness. Seems that the old Sylvania plants (i.e., US) don't manufacture exactly the same product as the Osram plants.

I believe the 9003 is also called H4 for sizing purposes. Since I'm not 100% certain on that, please double-check!

Another source to check is http://www.powerbulbs.com/ I have not purchased from them, but have read about them on other forums.

Mods

Lights - can't go wrong with Hella for off-roading lighting, cheaper and durable, as far as replacing OEM light bulbs, waste of time IMHO

Bug Guards - get an EGR, they are tapeless, knobless. attach with 4 screws and don't flap against the hood

Horn upgrade - go to your local auto chain store and pick up an air horn for around $20. It will make the mature noise you are looking for.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Brian!

I've done a preliminary search on the EGR guards and have only found one site that stocks them here in the US - and they only stock for american-made trucks and SUVs. Any ideas as to where I might find EGR product for the 4Runner?

Here's a page with all the info on IMPORTS and several different styles of guards by EGR and some other stuff.

http://www.tonnocover.com/ordering/orderegrsuperguard.asp

I researched all the bug guards and by far EGR is the best! IMO

You might call the number that the other guy suggested and see if someone local sells them. Someone in your town usually does.

If you aren't in a hurry, I can go home tonight and get my receipt for mine and tell you where I got it, what type exactly and how much it cost. I have a 2000 so it should be the exact same. Mine fastens on with four screws in about 2 minutes tops. Works like a charm! You can check my website and even look at what one looks like. Let me know if you want some pics, I can take some no problem.
