OME 882 vs. 883

I have a 2001 SR5 with the fat lip front bumper. Which OME front springs would you recommend and will I gain a full 3" of lift? I thought about the 881's with top out spacers but I don't want to over extend my c.v. axles because of the long OME shocks and top out spacer. Are the 882's softer than the 883's?

882 and 883 are heavier than 881

without a front bumper/winch combo I wouldnt even think about 883.

882's are good but a little rough without a bumper on it
 
883s are rated for less weight than 882s. 882s are heavy duties rated for 150+ lbs of additional front weight. 883s are medium duties rated for 100+ lbs add. front weight. It makes it confusing because the numbers go out of order as far as weight rating and stiffness - 881, 883, 882.

The 882s will be the roughest riding with your stock front bumper, then the 883s, then the 881s will be the smoothest. The 881s w/ the top spacers will give you the same amount of lift as the 882s or 883s (w/o the spacers) so don't get heavier coils if you think it will save your CVs by lifting it less - it won't, it'll just give you a harsh ride. Your CVs should be fine with any of these coils if you do a diff drop. You should get 3" over your stock '01 springs with any of these set-ups.

I don't know where you got that info but it is wrong. 883's have a higher springrate than 882s, but are shorter in length

No sir, you are wrong. Feel free to look at toytecs web site and all this info is on there. Or call them and talk to them in person like I did to verify and make sure before I purchased my coils. Or call ARB and verify with them like I did.

well there is a lot of info out there that conflicts with toytec's data. Everywhere else you look the 883 has a springrate of 590, while the 882's have a springrate of 500.

Man I'm confused?????????? I was in the middle of ordering my lift from toytech and now I can't make up my mind. Should I get the 883 not the 882 then w/ 891's for the rear. I'm going to have front and rear offroad bumpers and a rear drawer unit in the hatch. Could you guys steer me in the right direction. Any advice would be great on this.
 
If you are comparing springs and using the spring rate alone to determine which is heavier duty, that comparison only works if the two coils are the same size. The 883 has a heavier spring rate - not denying that, but since there is less actual coil (it's shorter and has less material), they do not provide as much support once the weight of the vehicle is on them, making them medium instead of heavy duty.

I remember those YT threads when I was doing my research. I saw so much conlicting info and so many people's speculations, I called the manufacturer directly. After having this explained to me by ARB USA, I called toytec and asked why the info on their site contradicted what the manufacturer told me. The info I'm referring to is the quote from post #3 on the 1st thread you linked us to:

This is what toytec changed that quote to:

A linear(springrate) spring is just that, the springrate stays constant as long as you don't have coil binding(touching coils). So a spring that has a higher springrate will always feel stiffer than a spring with a lower springrate if there is no binding. So it doesn't make any sense to say this.

With a stock bumper, the 883 will be the least likely to have coil binding, so unless the 882 is having coil binding with a stock bumper, it would feel softer. That is just the way springs work. Now if coils are binding, then the effective springrate goes up because the number of coils available for compression decreases so they must compress more per amount of force applied. This is where the 882 may potentially have a higher "weight duty" due to spring binding increasing effective springrate due to its longer length and lower springrate, but utilizing spring binding to achieve a higher springrate is just asking for sagging. Coil binding is a sure fire way to operate a spring outside of its intended range of use, and that is the number 1 cause of sagging. In either case, the correct way to account for additional weight duty is to use a higher springrate spring, not to use a longer lower springrate spring and depend on coil binding to increase its effective springrate.

So ARB told you the 883 was rated as medium duty for the 96-02 4runner? I find that hard to believe since that spring isn't even one of their approved applications and aren't warrantied if they are done so. As for Toytec, i don't really trust their engineering, they still list the tacoma bilstein 5100 as a 4runner application even though it has been widely reported as being underdamped for the heavier 4runner application and isn't a recommend bilstein application.
 
Yeah, I swear that's what ARB told me. They did inform me that the 883s were not originally designed for the 4runner, but when used in that application, are rated in-between the 881s and 882s for load. He did not mention that if I used 883s on my 4runner that they would not be under warranty. I'd imagine I would go through toytec for warranty problems anyways, but if one of their approved ditributors sold the wrong spring for the wrong application, that would be toytec's fault, not mine.
 
As far as the OP is concerned, the taller 882s if used without the additional weight of a winch/bumper combo will not compress down as far as intended and will provide more than 3" of lift resulting in steeper CV axle angles and more chance of damaging them. Just another reason to not run the 882s w/o the additional front weight. 883s are really the best choice if the OP doesn't want to run the spacers and 881s. I have ran my 883s w/o my ARB bumper on and they still sit at an acceptable angle unlike the 882s.
 
Thank's everyone for the responses! Sorry to start all this confusion! brian2sun, How did the 883's ride with the stock bumper? Since my runner is an 01' with the fat lip bumper, isn't it heavier than the 96'-98' front bumpers? I do plan on installing a 1" diff. drop with the lift. So with 882's, would the cv's be at acceptable levels?:shrug:
 
01PArunner, I never had the stock bumper on w/ the 883s, I just had no bumper (I took my ARB off the see about re-drilling the mounting holes to accomodate a body lift). Drove it around a little w/o the bumper on and it was a little rougher riding but not too bad. The CV angles still looked ok but were on the verge.

I bet the fat lip bumper weighs a bit more than the '96-98 bumpers, but it would probably be a pretty marginal difference. Def get a diff drop!!! I say w/ 882s and no winch bumper, the CV angles would be pretty steep. Search around, I've seen a few threads talking about this and most do not recommend it, but there are some that are running like that w/o problems.

I think it really depends on the CVs you're using, how old they are, etc... I personally would not take the chance with HD coils. Hell, in the past I had a 2.5" Daystar spacer lift ruin my CVs - even w/ a diff drop, so I would bet my $$ that you would have problems w/ the 882s.
