Ome 884 vs 885 coil questions

Here is the latest reply from rocky-road...

"ok I sell tons of ARB/OME. So as i told you before the spring #s have
changed, our competers may not know this. The 884,885,886 are all the
same spring rate tuned for the V8 specificly. The only difference is that
each spring is 10mm taller than the other. So if you put the 885 on the
front of a stock 4 runner it will be taller than the 884. Meaning you
will have alignment issues. The 885 is tuned for the V8 and a bumber, The
886 is tuned for the V8 and a bumber with winch. You told me you have a
stock truck with no plans on a bumper or winch. If this is the case go
with the 884. Its tuned for the V8 stock.
I have the new notes and have double checked with ARB on this issue.
Thanks Daniel"

Would the 885's be reason some have had trouble getting their caster in spec after the lift?

He seems to have looked into this for me and I'm sure I'm bugging the hell out of him with my concerns.

I am so confused at this point....

Hum... I guess I will let him give me the 884's.

Tucson T4R,
I am defenately interested in your springs in case I am unhappy with the 884's. If you want to find out what they will cost shipped to 80525 I would love to get them off you. Once again I appreaciate it and all the advice you have offered.

Thanks,
John

OK, I'll check on the shipping cost and let ya know. It shouldn't be too steep since it's only coming from Tucson..your right up the street.:biggrin2:

Just to repeat my self.....I ran the 885s when my V8 was totaly stock and I liked the set up. I would think the 884s would be either too soft or maybe just too low.

That's what I'm worried about and has me guessing it is why slee and wheeler are now recomending the 885's for the v-8. I guess slee and wheeler have not given ARB any feedback on their experiances otherwise you would think ARB would have updated their recomendations. Obviously Rocky-road is following ARB's recomendations.....

As I mentioned..... If I can get your 885 springs it would be wonderful and I really do appreaciate it. Just let me know when you get a chance at your convienance. :bigok:

You might want to double check with Slee Offroad on the spring rates. Your delaer is saying they are all the same spring rate, just different lengths.

Per another link on this subject comparing the 886 to the 885 springs:

"They are 7mm longer than the 885s and the rate is 660 lb/in compared to 590 lb/in for the 885."

If that is the case, then I would assume the 884s are also a softer spring rate than the 885s.

I would expect that Ben @ Slee could help set the record straight.

That's very interesting. Do you have a link by chance?
I think I just need to get your 885's and I'll be okay regardless of the specs....:D

It is concerning to hear two different things regarding the spring rates.....

more info from rocky-road.com

Here's another responce I recived from rocky-road regarding the subject after I asked a few more questions.

"Like I said other shops may not know about the change or the fact that the springs are actually the same spring rate just different heights. I talk to ARB daily as we are one of the largest OME dealers in the country so I get the updates very quickly. The V8 V6 is a none issue as the springs are tuned for the V8s and not the V6s. So the springs are set up for the V8 or theV8 and the additional weight. the only reason I could think other folks would recomend the 885 is to try and sell the kit as a taller lift height and not so much for the correct application they were
intended for."

I must say rocky-road has been taking the time to work with me and reply to all my emails in a timely manner. If the 885's are a better choice for the v-8..... ARB and rocky-road.com must not know it.

Got me.... It may in fact be due to my requirement for a good 2.5 + inch lift I was looking for. I would also be concerned because of the one person's comment about his experience with 884s bottoming out on a stock 4Runner used mostly on the street.

From my experience the 885s worked great. For some they might feel a little stiff but for my use and offroading they were perfect.

When I added the winch bumper and winch the 885s were pretty wallowy feeling and felt like they were always close to bottoming out. The 886s brought the ride hieght and firmness right back where it needed to be.

PS..Your 885s are shipped, they should be there Thursday.:biggrin2: I'll PM you the details.

well I called sleeoffroad.com and they were very helpfull especially considering I did not order through them and bought through a competitor. He in fact recomended the 885 for the v-8 and was suprised that ARB is listing the 884's for the v-8. He said they were the ones who gave ARB the recomendations .

Regardless Sleeoffroad and everyone else has convinced me to go with the 885's up front.

Now it's just a waiting game.

I think maybe there is an issue with my springs, or one of the shocks. I have ordered new coilovers, and I will just replace them. when I get a chance, I will look at the shocks, and springs to see if I could see anything out of the ordinary.

I'm glad they found a new home and can be put to good use again. They were just collecting dust in my garage with no future opportunities.

Let us know how the install goes and how you like the set up after driving it a bit.

BTW...Here is a good link showing what folks have gotten as far as ride hieght after their lifts.

http://www.toyota120.com/forum/showthread.php?p=16709#post16709

Notice most folks have a difference between the driver and passenger side hieghts. Check your springs before installing and if there is any difference, install the taller one on the driver's side to help compensate for the added wieght on that side (driver, gas tank, etc.)

Not a big deal and I don't even notice mine anymore. Just a little tip if you are seeking perfection.:biggrin2:

Lot's of discussion about he v8's.

What spings would you use for the v6's?

I have OME and V6.
Based on my experience I'd suggest going with 884 if you do not have a steel bumper with a winch and heavy skids. If you do plan to get an ARB or Shrokworks and upgrade your skids to heavy-duty ones, then go with 885.

no, not planning on any of those, except possible skip plate later.

How much height could I expect? I would need to keep the same as I do now.

I currently have the 3/2" cornfed, but I am starting to notice some sag to the front drivers side after a year.

I am running 32's
