OME 885 on 5100 bilstien

Just got the 5100 installed with stock shocks set at 2.5. I was told by down South motorsports not to run after market coil as it changes the valving of the shock. They also said not to run a spacer. I am trying to obtain 3" lift up front cause I would really like to run the 895 or superflex 2" lift in the rear. To keep it level or minimum rake. All in all I am just trying to maximize ground clearance without needing a uca just yet.

so what exactly are you asking? lemme see if I got this right, you just had 5100 installed up front (set at 2.5) & reused the stock springs? if you wanted at least 3in. you could of used FJ coils installed at the same time? also 885 with 5100 at the lowest setting would work also. lots of guys do it. Bilstein recommends the lowest setting when using any aftermarket coils.

Changing a spring does not change the valving of a shock. They operate independently yet complementary. With that being said you can run the 885 on the front 5100's (bottom setting). But I would be aware though that the 895 (rear) are pushing the valving limit on the rear 5100's. If you are not carrying loads in the rear the superflex rear would be a softer option.
 
So I guess if I want the 895 I should use the ome shocks for the rear. I would jave used fj coils up front but could not find a set.

You can use the bilstein 5100. Just know they are going to be at the edge of the dampening range. I assume you are going to be carrying loads all the time? 895's are 40% stiffer than stock, Superflex's are 10-15% stiffer than stock. The OME rear dampers are very firm. I ran bilstein, OME and now custom valve Fox's.
 
Not going to have a load all the time. I am installing a rake that weighs 95lbs and eventually going to run 32" tires so if the spare doesn't fit under the ride it will be on the rack. Either way it will be in the back. I also plan on fabbing a rear bumper but thats not in the cards anytime soon. Unless I get rear ended or something of that nature.

Awesome! I just stumbled onto this thread. Im looking at changing spring rates front and rear. Im starting with the rear springs first. I have the 5100's front and rear. The factory spring rates and the valving of the 5100's for my taste and sportier style of on road and off road driving needs much more attention. In the rear I have the 1.5" spacer temporarily. Didn't think I was keeping the rig. I know better to use spacers when performance is what one is seeking. Im looking for the 2" lift spring with a heavier rate, but don't know which spring of the many to choose.
Here are some of my specific needs from my truck and components. First I need a heavier rate to improve handling, also to help the compression valving on the rear 5100's. Hopefully the rebound doesn't become too fast in the rear due to the added spring rate. Next, I do carry daily, around 200#'s of gear at any given time during my regular work week. When off road, the same thing applies, just different gear. I was thinking the Radflow rears because of the added rate. I don't mind a somewhat firm ride when empty. Im use to a firm, well handling ride from my SRT8. I want a spring that will handle the fun sporty trails and dips. But still want the articulation when going from the desert floor to the higher elevations.
UPFRONT; Why is everyone running the 5100's at the lowest setting, a heavier spring and a spacer? It would seem to me, with the heavier spring, and the height adjustments, one could achieve the same. Yes, I can see the compression valving increase as a heavier spring, and the adjusted heights on the 5100's take place, but how bad can it be? Sorry for the long post. Just checking in to see what the perfect combo is for my type of use. Thanks in advance!

If you are always carrying 200# of gear use the 895 springs in the rear. Some have run the 885 front on the 0.85" setting on the 5100's to get 3" front (or just a tad more).

in my 06 4runner with the v6 I've got the bilstein 885s in the rear with 5100s all around and maxed out at 2.5" upfront with stock coils. it rides a lot firmer then stock. I dont add much weight in the truck. Maybe 100lbs with camping gear.

What's the difference in front height with installing fj coils and keeping the front set at 2.5 or putting in OME 885s and lowering the level to 0? My goal is to gain an 1" to 1.5" over where it sits now.

If I go the fj route do I need to lower the front to 0 or can I keep it at 2.5? Im not sure how much taller the 885 is over the fjs.

I don't think you have 885 in the rear. Maybe 895's. IMHO 895's are at the limit of the Bikstein 5100 dampening range. The 895 is 40% higher rate than stock. Like I mentioned earlier I don't the 895 is the best rear spring unless you are carrying 200+# all the time.

In the front if you put an 885 on the lowest perch of the 5100's you will get ~2.5". If you use one notch up people are getting 3" or so. The 885 up front will be firmer and better load capacity then the oem spring on the 2.5" setting. Preloading the stock springs (ie moving to the 2.5" perch) will give a firmer feel. I like the 885's but might even suggest the Eibach front springs. IIRC they have 1 less coil than the 885's and are similar rate.

Over the years I have tried many different suspensions and come to one conclusion. Run the softest spring you can to get the height, load capacity and suspension travel you want. I will probably be swapping my rear springs this spring after our next trip.
 
A quick update. Installed the OME 895's, and raised the front Bilsteins to max height using stock front springs. This little thing is a blast to drive on road and off road. It hauls ass and handles very well for what it really is. For now, Im done with the suspension tuning until I go with UCA's, Fox or King Coilovers far down the road. Just ordered 1.25 front, and 1.5 rear wheel spacers. The next step now, is to work on the undercarriage armor. I will either build my own, or rely on everyone here to guide me to the good vendor leads.

I thought I heard witt the 885s you shoulnt raise the 5100s past the base setting?

Maybe a 1" spacer with my current setup?

I just want a good cost effective way to get another 1"-1.5".

Bilstein doesn't suggest using the 0.85" for aftermarket springs.. But several folks have done it.

Keep in mind once you are past 3" you will need caster corrected UCA's to get a good alignment.
 
I added the OME 895's and I love the way the truck rides drives handles on road and especially off. Lately I have not had any cargo in the rear and this thing is not too firm. It handles like a champ. The rear Bilsteins love their new buddy the rear springs. Both work excellent together. The Bilsteins are not being overworked anymore. Plus with my off road gear and a couple passangers, the truck once again rides on and off road like a magic carpet. Just my opinion. That's the cool thing about motorsports and chassis tuning. I would work on and do chassis setups on two identical cars but for two different drivers. Each one had their own comfort level and chassis setup. My setup is done for the time being. I will see how it changes after my 1.25 and 1.5" wheel spacers come in. Thanks for all the assistance fellas.
