OME Rears Swapped for LC 8 wraps... why??

I've searched EVERY post on this board and read the lift sticky posts but I'm still having a tough decision deciding on a lift mainly because I see guys swapping their lifts out after a few months.

Here is where I am at:

I was originally going to do the SS 1.2 but decided it's too expensive and I would rather spread the the money around and get more stuff like skids/sliders/gears.

That pretty much sold me on the OME 883/890s but then I'm seeing lots of guys swapping their 890/891s out for the LC coils in the rear which got me searching tons more posts and led to more questions and possiblities. Here is what I was wondering.

1. Why did you swap your OME for LC Coils?
2. Which Shocks are you running with your LC Coils.
3. Where did you get your coils from?
3. What was the height difference between the OME setups and your LC setups?

Thanks!

I may be wrong but the thing with the SS 1.2 versus just getting the OME is that the SS is a full bolt on set where as OME only sells springs and shocks. i went with the SS and am very happy with it.
as far as the LC coils versus the OME is just stiffness. figure out how much weight you will be carrying and what kind of driving you will be doing and get either the heavier springs or the lighter ones.

When I was changing out my stock rear coils, I was considering LC 8-9 wraps because they are available and cheap. But the LC coils would give me too much lift in the rear. I went with OME 890s and I find that they are stiffer than stock, but not really that bad. The stiffer ride is just as well because at least the rear doesnt sag too much on a full load, which I need to do on occasion.

OME 890, 891 - moderate lift, carries heavier anticipated loads (such as a plate rear bumper, etc.), or for towing.
LC 8-9 wraps - higher lift, softer ride, but will reportedly sag under heavy loads.

I'm currently running 891 with 10mm packers. I have a pair of 9.25 wrap LC coils that I want to try. I carry a fair amount of weight so I'm hoping that they will compress some but still increase my lift. The LC coils are known to flex great.

Another option for if you have an off road bumper and armor is OME 861s. They're sorta the best of both worlds IMO. They are tall like LC coils, but they handle weight better than 891s. I don't think they would be very good to use if you don't have weight though.

Its pretty funny to see everyone running FZJ-80 coils these days. They are great. I am pretty sure I was the 1st or 2nd to run them (at least that I know of) probably back in 2005 to match the front end of my 6" drop bracket lift. Noone believed me on how soft they rode, because htey were so tall, or something.

Thing is... if you aren't planning on carrying weight (camping) or towing a trailer, Id go for FZJ80 coils in a heartbeat. They are absolutely amazing offroad. People trip out on how much travel you get with them in the rear with stock components and just some longer shocks and coils.

The OME coils will be better if you plan on loading the truck up with weight though.

I thought about the 861s Brian and I 've read through several build threads as well as yours, I don't typically carry that much weight but I do tow my boat like 2 times a year but would rather have the offroad capability vs the towing as I have access to an alternate tow vehicle if I need.

I appreciate everones imput and have decided on the LC coils color code:
Blue/Yellow/White and Green/Yellow/White along with the Tokico trekmasters based on what you said Brian. Up front will be the OME 883/9004 comfort shocks and diff drop. (all above has been ordered) :guitar3:

Decided on the Maxxis Bighorn and still on the fence between the 255 and 285.

After all this and I recover a bit financially i'll work on the gears, skids/sliders and hopefully a locker!

TheeMikeB,
I am looking forward to seeing your rig set-up with those components. I am considering a very similiar setup but with OME rears and 255 BFG MT KM2's.

Well we should call you OG then! lol... What made you decide to try those springs in the first place?

Which part of SD you from? I'm from there but now live in Nor Cal.

i think a bottom line here would be weight. if u want more lift/flex without extra weight go w LC's

if u have weight/aftmarket bumper in rear go w OME's

not really a whole lot more to say about it. . . . the LC's are realllllly SQUISSHY.

Just want to add a note on the weight carrying capabilities of the 8 wraps. I towed an 18' closed deck dove tail car trailer with a 2 post car lift with my 4Runner, no trailer brakes, and in a bout 4 inches of snow. It rode just fine with minimal sag, stopping was the only problem I had.

Well as for towing I can just install airbags if I needed to stiffen up the rear end.. problem solved no? Accoring to Sonoran Steel's site he recommends the AIR LIFT 60743 1000 Series Rear Air Spring Kit to use with his 1.2 kit wich is essentially the 8 wrap LC coils. So those of us running the LCs in the back and needed to tow can just put these in.

I plan to try without first and if it sucks i'll give these a shot.

People that have the airbags tend to really like them. I've never used them, but I've read a lot of happy reviews.

I love my 890s because I haul stuff in my runner like most people would in a trailer or a pickup.
Yesterday I loaded up a bunch of the 5 pound wall stones from Lowes and hauled them home for my wife to build some dang thing with.
Those 890s took the weight damn well and the ride got so much softer, but the butt didnt sag.
Unloaded, the ride is stiff/bouncy, but hey - its a a 4Runner, not a lexus.

The big problem with airbags can come when flexing. Sometimes the airline (that feeds thru a hole in the lower spring mount) gets caught and pulls off the nipple of the bag. I had them once. They were great, being able to adjust for the load. This issue did happen to me a couple of times.
