OME vs Coil overs

Just looking for some education:

What is the difference exactly ??

Don't they both have coils that go over shock's ?

Pics of each shock spring set up would be cool.

from what I understand, coilovers are adjustable..giving you the freedom to choose the range of spring rate while the OME set up is springs/shocks with a pre-determined range. Coilovers are more expensive too I believe.

You will pay around double for coilovers compared to OME. They are adjustable for ride height, as well as ride quality (Stiffness.) It also depends on your future modifications. If you think you may end up doing something heavy later on down the road, such as a bumper, coilovers will suit you better since you can adjust them to compensate for the added weight.

Example: If you get medium OME coils now, and need to add weight later, you will have to buy Heavy coils, and end up paying the same as Coilovers in the long run.

Coilovers also have downfalls such as having to get them rebuilt eventually. OME is better for a longer spectrum, but CO's give you more options for variety.

Also, Mike if you go with Coilovers, be careful with the rear components. I have heard that the SAW rear components will sag from their 2.0" as advertised, to about 1.5". I am not sure about Icon, but do some research. That's why I did OME on the rear.

Here are some pictures. It still looks nose high to me, and is a bit stiff, so I will be adjusting the coilovers this monday to lower the front a little bit.

So you went Sway Away in front and OME in back ?

Yes the nose looks quite high .

Thats interesting to know what the difference is. I like the idea of adjustment to ride quality idea , but the OME I though had a nice ride too from what I read.

Oh well thanks for bringing me up to speed :D

Falls, another choice would be OME and the Bilstein adjustables. If you go that way you have minimal adjustability. You can't use all the ride height options but can adjust a bit. I have great interest in some 883's on the adjustable Bilsteins. Maybe that's a goofy setup, still researching.

Yeah I like it so far, it's a bit stiff in the front from it being cranked so high. So I'll adjust it tomorrow and let you know how it rides. It handles great though. A dip that normally launches me in the air going 30-40mph did absolutely nothing at 60 mph.

Blair and I are going back up to Big Bear next weekend for a few days so I'll be able to report back with how it handles offroad.

Yeah, anything other than a spacer lift requires Xreas being disconnected.

I don't notice any difference whatsoever. It makes me think it was totally useless unless I do an insanely fast turn.
 
your tire still look good with that 3" lift! Could you please take a head on shot when you have time? Thanks in advance!

Have to wait til Feb. 09 to see if I'll keep it , turn in the lease or buy it out. I would like to buy it out but depends on value. I will just get a different one if I need to and buy it . This was the only time I have EVER leased . Never do it again , although it was financially very beneficial to me since I don't have much of my own money into it.

I also do want another option thats available on the later models , but well see.

Also the 4R Trail Edition is supposed to be out so I may have into check into that. No v8 in that though.....

That's odd that it won't come in a V8. However, if you don't tow, I see the rear locker more than making up for that.

Probably very true ........ just love my V8 so darn much.

Probably cause the e-locker wouldn't be able to handle the added power of the V8. I suspect it's the same unit derived off the Tacoma and probably FJ Cruiser. IIRC, I think on TTORA, some have reported busted e-lockers on their Tacomas.

I'm always dragging trailers around....lol. The V6 can handle a lot of towing and has the power to do it. One thing though the real reason I always get a trailer tow package is that it they usually come with oil & tranny cooler which I think is important to have if you tow or not. The cooler you can keep it the better. Thats just my thinking.

Do any of you have links to the SAW Coilovers and OME Lifts for 4Runners that I can check out. I'm ready to scrap these spacers, I want my full 3" of lift again. I'm so tired of these sagging Revtek spacers:mad:
HB 4X4, your 4Runner looks great bro, how did it handle off road at Big Bear?

Good.

I am swapping out my rear OME's with SAW's to match my front, so if you are interested in OME's let me know before I get rid of them because you can get the rear's much cheaper off of me. Only 1 month of use on them.
