OME with Bilstein not recommended?

Some places don't seem to recommend matching up OME with bilstein 5100s. I understand the OMEs tend to be a little stiff and are probably engineered to work better with OME shocks which are softer, but it seems like it's a pretty common setup. What gives?

Out of curiosity, what are they recommending instead of the 5100's? Admittedly I have OME springs and Bilstein shocks and am quite happy with them, but I also understand that there are better (albeit usually much more expensive) options such as the ICON shocks.

The OME nitro shocks. Bilstein with eibach.
 
Everything I've seen says the OME shocks are too stiff and that changing to the Bilsteins made the ride much better.

I really like my OME + Bilstein combo.
 
Yeah, I've heard this too. It sounds like people run them without a problem, just know that Bilstein won't warranty them since it's not a "supported" application. Don't get me started, and ask me how I know...sigh.
 
They should now that you can get 4runner specific 5100's. Unless you're referring to running them with non OEM springs?

I've never heard this. Bilstein lists the 4600, 5100, 5100 adjustable, and 6112 shocks as fitting my 1999 right on their own website. Can anyone else verify this?

Now that they have a 4Runner specific 5100, yes, putting them on a 4Runner won't void the warranty. Pairing them with a non-supported spring will. When I was working with Bilstein to replace my 5100's, I couldn't get them warrantied because they were Tundra 5100's with an Eibach Spring. Two things in my setup voided my warranty...the fact that it was a Tundra shock on a 4Runner (which I didn't tell them, but read others ran into), and a spring they didn't like.

I asked if I got the Tacoma ones the next time around if that would be covered, and they said only if it had an OEM (NOT OLD MAN EMU) spring. I'd venture a guess that the TRD spring would be acceptable to them, but I already had perfectly fine Eibach's so whatever.

Pretty straightforward warranty policy honestly, and not super different from any other company on the planet.
 
I'm running 906's and 5100's out back and am really happy with the ride. I don't feel that they're firm at all; they're very compliant.
 
The 4Runner specific 5100's call for a 2" lift with 220lb springs - of which there is only one choice, the OME 906's. They also show 1.5" spacer lift and stock springs as options for the rear. The front calls for using the factory spring.

Right from the install instructions:

*PLEASE NOTE: For optimum ride performance it is recommended that 2" lift rear coil springs be installed (220 lb/in) in conjunction with the 5100 series front (24-248730) and rear (24-249966) shock absorbers*

I have 5100s all around with OME 881s up front and 890s on the back. Not stiff at all! From what I've read it's the best combo. OME says to pair their springs with their shock. Naturally. They wouldn't say to pair them with a competitor. I think there is plenty of evidence on this forum alone that says the Bilstein OME combo is pretty damn good. ☺️

I had my step-dad blow out the 5100 shocks made for his Tacoma twice because he didn't have a lift on it. Now it's a Tacoma and not a 4runner but without a lift on the rear I would just do the 4600s. That's probably where this statement is coming from. I think the 5100 isn't meant to run with stock height in the rear.

Same here, love the ride and not stiff at all. Just wish the front was a 1/2" taller. Right now my hub to finder measurement is 23"rear and 22"front (on 2nd perch).

Where are you sitting 4Runnin2000?

I have my fronts on the second notch also. I actually wish my rear was a little higher. I'm sitting at 23" all around. Except for the front driver side which is about 3/8 inches lower. I haven't put a spacer in to fix that yet

You want a 1-2" rake. This is how most stock vehicles are anyways. Helps keep vehicle level when loaded down.
