One of my top criteria that led me to pick a 3rd Gen T4R was digital security. My 2002 beastie is pretty smart, but not so smart that it's not mine. I suppose now I just have to be careful about what gets plugged into the OBD ports and by whom.

Either way with all the cars on the road that can be hacked. We are in just as much danger also. Driving down highway and hacked car slams into you from steer assist. They need to figure this out, disconnect these "weapons" from the networks completely.

I said it a long time ago when they first offered wifi in a vehicle. It's only a matter of time before a hacker gets in and starts screwing with stuff. No one needs wifi in their vehicles. They are trying to do away with texting and driving and at the same time they are increasing our connection capabilities with our phones. Love the irony of life.

If a hacker could throttle up an airliner engine causing plane to climb using a laptop hacked into the entertainment system it was only a matter of time till someone hacked a vehicle. Ugh.

Even when I bought a brand new vehicle I got the mostly base model. I believe in the driving experience and am not a fan of all the electronic distractors that seem to be the thing these days

I dislike the new nav systems and backup cameras. Actually, the backup cameras are pretty nice but not nice enough to have a big ugly LCD screen distracting you all the time. I am definitely not upgrading the CD/Tape/FM/AM system in my 4th gen.

I work at a large software company in Redmond that starts with an 'M' so I study computer security and these sorts of hacks are definitely possible. The industry just wants to sweep all these security flaws under the rug. At first they claimed that you had to have physical access to the vehicle for this sort of hack but now these guys have demonstrated a remote hack.

I predict a "future crime" where you call up a Google self-driving car and hackers in China drive the car into a bridge abutment at 90 mph killing everyone inside.

Nothing like touting a product that looks good on paper, sounds good in the media and makes shareholders wealthy in the mold of Gordon Gekko but can't hold the mustard when studied or scrutinized closely.

The less computerized stuff in my automobile, then better. If I need to rely on lane assist, back up cameras, etc., then I need to put down the keys for good.

In Russia they have gone back to using typewriters for documenting highly classified inner office information. At least no one will be stealing it without some James Bond sleuth gadgetry.

Self driving cars are a sure thing. For every computer controlled car device that gets hacked, I'd be willing to bet there are 1000's of fatalities as a direct result of driver error. Hell, we've had two driver error accidents on the front page of this sub forum in the last week alone! The sooner self driving cars come out, the sooner I can start "driving" naked to work, while masturbating, eating a can of spam, and playing Call of Duty.

Hell, we've had two driver error accidents on the front page of this sub forum in the last week alone! Yea at 25mph which is what so far is the speed limits set for these self driving cars. I will drive them over with my truck and call it the cars fault after I hack it and make it go into my lane. Sorry google car. (no pedestrians inside, not that evil).

When they come out with a self driving 4x4 I'll probably make my first trip to Moab. Make that 16 hour drive more appealing.

Hopefully it'll just take me on a tour of the trails I want too. Then I could just cry in the backseat and cover my eyes when the scary stuff happens.

So far they are limited to residential electric cars and have to obey a 25mph speed limit. Google engineers believe one day they will go faster, even will do 10mph over speed limit to stay with traffic as a slower car in speeding traffic is actually more dangerous.

But for now 25mph is what they will do when released.

That's beyond disgusting man — seriously I feel nauseated at the mere thought of eating Spam...by itself without an omelet or something.

As for the self driving cars...I'll pass. I'm going to be that old guy who refuses to give up his gas-guzzling antique 4Runner. You'll spot me easy as I swerve dangerously in & out of the massive convoy of boring uber safe Google-mobiles while flipping the bird and laying on the Hella Supertones....

Self driving cars are a sure thing, and coming faster than you'd imagine. All the big auto suppliers are gearing up for it already. The CEO of ZF (TRW) just told their employees that it was a top priority. They're the largest supplier in the world so you can bet there's a lot of stuff in the works that we haven't even seen yet.
