online discount/wholesale stores creditability...

Do I need to worry about buying from a “online wholesale” or "discount store" versus a “authorized dealer”, like Crutchfield? Of course I’m only talking about the places that are selling 100% newly boxed, no refurbished equipment, or anything used. These places seem legit, have return policies, 30 warranties, and all that. I’m finding great prices for a couple of places, it could save me hundreds of dollars on a whole system. Should I buy from them or not? Could it be a big mistake?

Specifically I’m looking at getting Alpine HU & amp at one of these places:

i don't know about those prices, i've never priced audio equipment. but as far as getting something from a discount place. as long as it's 100% new and such, i don't think you'd have much of an issue. if the discount place decides to screw you, you can always deal directly with the manufacturer. it would be more of a pain, but you shouldn't be out any money. and as a last resort, you could always buy the same thing from crutchfield or the like and return the broken one. they'd never know :)
 
Some of these places may be selling "grey market" goods... meaning they were intended to be sold overseas, but were held or diverted to the U.S. for sale. The items themselves may be fine, but some may not be covered in the U.S. under warranty. This is often the case for electronics, cameras etc. you see where the price is too good to be true...

The only problem that I see with ikesound.com is that they're one of the onliners who use shipping fees to recoup some of their "discount prices". It can't possibly cost $31 to ship a sub and amp.

back then ikesounds.com offered free shipping. ...think $31 is just alittle over prices but it's around there.. subs are not light plus adding a amp...that's a good 15, 20 + pounds.

I do shipping for a living so i deal w. UPS , Fedex etc everyday. There are fees that customers dont know about ...example for UPS, they charge $1.50 extra for residential address and also charge for oversize boxes.

But I do have to say... half the online sites charge alot for shipping.

That's understandable, but shipping for a high end sub and amp is $65. I'm assuming that the more expensive subs and amps don't weigh twice as much.

It's fine, and all, I just wish that these companies would just charge reasonable shipping rates and add the hidden money back into the products. I guess it's essentially 6, 1/2 dozen, the other---if you're okay paying for it then who cares where the extra money comes in? It's just a pet peeve of mine (stemming from ebay auctions) when they have "low prices" and then stick you in terms of shipping.

I have bought from Sound Domain and indoaudio (on ebay) and been very pleased with then. I need to get a new amp and sub. And I'm looking for an overhead video system and DVD player. I'll be perusing those sites for the rest of that gear soon.
