Open diff in locker housing

Has anyone successfully put an open diff in an e locker housing?

I picked up a 02 limited with a shot rear end in fair condition for $300. I plan for this truck to be my winter beater(I also have a 98 and 99 SR5). Found a rear end in the junkyard in good condition but totally overlooked the fact that it was an e locker. Did the spin test hoping I'd get lucky and it would be a 4.10 locker but no luck. It's a 4.30. A fellow forum member wants to trade his 4.10 open diff for my e locker.

Can the open diff bolt into a locker housing with no problems?

Why don't you get a 4.3 front diff to install along with your new 4.3 locker rear diff, then you will have an e-locker rear? That's what I'm doing, front diffs are cheap and pretty much always in great condition.

I don't quite understand what you want to do. You want to crack open your new differential and replace gears?

If you are wondering if you can simply pull off your 4.1 complete rear end and swap in an e-locker rear end, yes, they are exactly the same outside except for the little e-locker mechanism which doesn't get in the way of anything.

See if you can get the matching 4.30 front diff out of the same T4R.

As for your question about installing an open diff into an E-locker housing.
I'm going to say yes you could, BUT the bolt pattern is different and you are going to be missing a mounting hole or two.

NO look at the pics above. You could weld a plate to close the gap and make the correct gasket surface but that is a lot of work.

im pretty sure its been done, and it does seal up. just barely. but from my understanding it seals.

That's what I was looking for. Thanks for the info. Guess I'll go grab the front diff tomorrow. Are front diffs the same from 96-02?
