Opening rear hatch from inside

I'm in the process of building a storage box/ sleeping platform in my 99 and I was wondering if anyone had done a mod so that you could open the rear hatch from the inside? It would sure make crawling out in the morning easier, plus we are looking at getting a tent that comes off the back of the truck. Any ideas?

Look at antman's thread. He has a mod to add a hatch rlease button for the lift gate. I implemented it. It works. Though after like 20 minutes it stops working unless tou lock and unlock the car again.
 
There's not much room in there at all when the window rolls down, I'm really curious to see if anybody has done it.
 
Might try a trunk popper if there is enough room. They are only about 3" diameter & 5" long. Plus they are only about $25. I think I'll pull the cover off tomorrow & see just how much room I have to work with.
 
After pulling the hatch apart 5+ times in the last 48 hours, I'm sure you can build something, but you'll have to work around the glass. You can probably just get a cable attached somehow, and then just route it around the window, coming out near the drivers side of the hatch. Pull your interior cable, and "pop", without or without unlocking it.
 
yeah I have wired in an ALWAYS ON Rear window switch inside the rear cubby,
so then when you want to get out just roll the window down and reach out to the handle, works awesome and when you are sleeping and want some air you don't have to get up and stick the key in and all that.

Not sure if you can do it on 00 and older but the fiancé can roll her back window down with her remote wish I could do that with mine just keep the keys accessible.

My 2000 Limited can also do this from the remote. The problem is that you cannot roll it back up from the remote, so when things get chilly, either get tighter in your bedroll or brave the cold momentarily and sneak to the front seat to hit the button by hand.

Either that, or leave A key in the ignition, take your keyfob with you to the back, and get a stick and good aim that gives you the extra armlength needed to roll that beast up.

Still, a latch from the inside would be dope.
 
Thanks guys! After having the cover off today it looks like there is enough room for a trunk release solenoid to be used for this. I ordered a cable pull solenoid from Amazon today. That & a window switch mounted in the back should fit the bill. It's going to be a few weeks before I can tackle it, but I'll post it up when I get to it.

You put in your hatch release yet?
 
Not yet. I have the solenoid & relay, just need to get a good switch & find the time. My SAR training has been eating all my weekends lately.
 
When I sleep in the runner I usually just push the button to role down the rear window and open it that way, or just use the rear doors. I use the doors more often than anything.
 
Has anyone attempted this since? I like the idea of rolling the window down and reaching out, but that isn't ideal if its raining outside, and it rains a lot up here :)

I was able to do it. There's a successful thread somewhere but I can describe it and try to take some pictures in the next couple days.

I used some old bike shifter cable I had lying around and some housing, put the head of the cable into the release mechanism so when you pull it, it opens the same way as the hatch handle.

I routed the cable housing around the bottom of the glass (follow the cables) and to the interior side, routed up to the glass seam with a hole. This holds the housing in place when you pull on it. works like a charm. I'll try to get some pics soon

Were you able to get some pictures?
I installed a window switch at the back so I can roll down, reach out and release the hatch, but its a bit annoying with my relectix velcroed inside
