Opening the doors WHILE driving

Has anyone noticed that you can OPEN the front doors WHILE driving? Even when [auto] locked? The rear doors have a child lock, but I haven't tested them yet.

I was driving about 30 mph and my gf pulled the handle and the passenger door unlocked (I don't know why she did), and it opened! I tried it on the driver side with one hand on the wheel and foot on the throttle, and it opened too!

Seems like a safety issue.. is there some kind of setting for this? Does Toyota know about his?

Well. You can also throw it in park. Or reverse. Or roll down the window and hurl yourself out. You could set off a flare in the cabin too.

I don’t understand the amazement. All cars allow the doors to be opened, driving or not. The last thing we want is more nanny bullshit that starts from howls like this.
 
Some cars, once the door is locked, won't allow you to just pull the handle from the inside and open the door. Once locked, it's locked both inside and hopefully obviously from the outside as well. Just not the 4runner.

Look at it this way, perhaps it's a safety issue to be "locked" inside the car as well, just a different point of view. Or just a convenience to not have to remember to 'unlock' it every time you want to get out.

I've owned mine 5th Gen since 2011, it's never been an issue.
 
Jesus christ. Its time for a new girlfriend. :redbrick: First off dont pull on the door handle unless you intend to actually open the door. Even my kids know better.

THe red button that unlocks seat belts can also be pressed while the car is in motion. We better report this to someone stat!

I can't understand why an adult would intentionally open a door in a moving vehicle. That being said, my 04 Tacoma does not allow you to open the door from the inside when it is locked, front or rear doors. Our 17 4Runner does allow you to open the front doors from the inside whenever you like.
 
Gotta open the doors while driving to let the snow gremlins out/in! Otherwise you will have a terrible ski day. :laugh:
 
Hmmm, I've never owen a car that I couldn't open the doors while I was driving.

I mean I have only owned 18 +/- cars over the years but like, how else are you supposed to dump the body?
 
So you're saying you were trying to abduct a female and she was able to open the door while you were driving and escape?

You can also shove your arm into the the serpentine belt while the motor is running.

Common sense would tell you not to right? Seems like the gf is fresh out.

I suggest you trade-in buy a Jeep instead...

Seeing so many posts of this kind of sh!t in recent years makes me be ashamed to own a 4runner. WTF happened, when I joined, once in a blue moon, now every day.

This is normal and also why child lock was invented. I would hate to have the doors not open when locked. My VWs back doors unlock with the first pull then open with the second pull and that’s still annoying lol

The door handle was meant to unlock as you pull. Its been this way in vehicles decades unless you just came from some mid nineties economy car. Its feature of a convenience to intentionally open the door in 1 motion rather than 2 motions. Locks were meant to keep intruders out.

the honda civic crowd graduated to toyotas.. that's why we get such threads "uh how many LEDS can I cram into the headlights"

that's ****ing terrifying, that should not be how doors work unless the child lock is engaged
 
I am glad you can open the door!.......If I am heading for a cliff with no brakes or being held at gunpoint I can jump out without coming to a stop and shifting into park first! Children in the back with the child lock on should NOT have the option though.......maybe I'm tired of their fighting and sending them off the cliff intentionally!:fear:
