In the year that I've owned my 4Runner, one of the things that has really bothered me is the carpeted cargo area in the back, especially when you own a white dog that sheds a LOT like I do.

So this week I went to Line-X and asked what they would charge to spray their adhesive over the carpet pieces, vice removing the carpet and spraying the bare panels. Their quote was outrageous ($375, which was eventually lowered to $275 after some discussion). He stated it would be labor and material intensive as the first coat would need to be sanded down to remove the fuzzy pieces that would show through, then a second coat would be needed to finish off the look.

Needless to say I left without having the work completed. Today however I decided I was going to remove all the carpet and go back to Line-X tomorrow morning to hopefully get a lower quote (hopefully around $150 max) now that the carpeting is removed from all of the pieces.

Anyway, here are the results from today's destruction. All in all it took about 3 hrs from start to finish to disassemble each piece and remove the carpeting. Let me know what you think......completion pics to follow if they give me a reasonable quote.

Dude, you're gonna have someone SPRAY stuff .... INSIDE .... your car??

You really want to think twice before you spray something inside of your vehicle. If you are really going to put some type of coating back there get the stuff at NAPA and use a little roller to roll it on. Overspray on leather seats is really really hard to clean if not impossible.
 
If memory serves, there was a previous thread on this subject and I believe the poster took out his carpet, but used the carpet for templates. He then cut out either ply wood or some sort of plastic and sprayed those pieces. He then installed the sprayed panels in place of the carpet. As I recall he did all the work himself and it worked great for him.
 
You guys are hysterical........NO THEY ARE NOT GOING TO SPRAY THE PANELS INSIDE THE VEHICLE, haha. :hatsoff:

I was just showing you pics above of the work done.....the panels are getting pulled back out tonight and dropped off to be sprayed. Got him talked down to $150 which I thought was reasonable considering good cargo liners cost nearly that much or more.

Awesome commitment to this mod Man! I'm very interested in how it turns out. I was going to second the recommendation to do it yourself with a bed liner kit, but $150 is worth it if they spray it on as thick as they do for bed liners. I ripped everything out of my last Wrangler and went the DIY route, it took multiple coats and was a bear to clean up, post some pics soon.
 
you worried about any smells or noxious fumes coming off the liner, especially as it cures or on hot days?

Pic 8: Bottom Carpet Piece - which doesn't look as bad as the picture shows (see Pic 9 below). This was the only piece he said wouldn't turn out well unless I paid extra for him to spray it once, sand it smooth, and respray to get the same texture. The fact that it's an actual piece of carpet made it to where he couldn't control the texture since the carpet pieces bleed through the spray - I was okay with this since it's under the cargo tray and you can't really see it anyway.

Pic 10/11/12: This was the only piece that didn't turn out as well as I hoped. In short, this piece as you can see has 2 dramatic pre-bent forms in it and once he sprayed the Line-X on it, it took the shape of the Line-X causing me to have to use some muscle to bend it back into shape.

All in all I'm pretty happy with the way it turned out. I didn't care for the attitude of the owner (1 man show/owner) who tried to pull the "for $150, I told you it would be very basic"...........especially after I told him before I committed to this deal that I didn't want it to look "ghetto" and that I wanted the edges of everything to look clean as though it was a factory option.

The only piece that didn't come out as well as I wanted was the center seat lower portion (Pic 3/4). It has 2 dramatic bends in the plastic and as a result, the inserts too the form of the Line-X making it difficult to reinstall (I ended up bending the plastic and Line-X until it got back to the shape it needed to reinstall).

Finally, I'm gonna load the dog into the 4Runner and go for a drive to see if he still slides around. I'm thinking that he will still slide a little, but much less then the slick carpet that was there before. Wish me luck.

Finally, for those who want to do this here are my lessons learned:

1) Leave the carpet on and pay the extra money to have them sand down the first layer (to remove the carpet pieces that poke through). Fit and finish wise, I think it would have looked better (there are gaps now in my rear seats where the carpet originally meshed together)

2) Be careful not to break the driver/passenger rear where it bends. When I as removing the carpet, I pulled too hard and tore the flimsy plastic tack welds. Keeping those pieces as one would have looked better (live and learn)

3) Buy some extra plug lock inserts from Toyota because you are gonna need them. When I disassembled/reassembled the cargo area, I broke about 5 blue inserts and 1 white insert. It cost me $10 (originally $15 but he gave me a military discount) at Toyota Parts for replacements (I bought 6 blue, and 3 white).

4) Black Hammerite Spray Paint matches pretty good on areas that missed getting sprayed (not perfect, but better then a semi-gloss black since the hammerite is textured looking like the spray).

Thanks.......I thought about doing it myself but after using Herculiner and Raptor on my Tacoma and CJ5, I vowed never to use the DIY stuff again as it's just NOT as good as what the pros use (Line-X and Rhino Lining). And for $150, it was a no-brainer since a gallon of Herculiner/Raptor sells for $100 not counting all the prep tools you need.

Nope. So far I've got no smell inside and from what I've researched, its pretty much odorless - only time will tell though. Worst case scenario, I buy new panels and reinstall it back to factory.
 
:thanks: for the comments, glad you guys don't think I'm crazy anymore, haha.

As for the dog, he still slides around which I kinda figured would happen. The only thing that has kept the dog from sliding are the industrial rubber kitchen mats, which I ended up returning since the rubber matting stunk up the 4Runner.

Now all that is left is to test the cleanup process after my dog has had a chance to ride around in the back and shed his white hair all over the place. More to follow on the cleanup process.
 
Very cool idea. I carry my sons motorcycle and all kinds of other stuff that makes the carpet impossible to clean. This would make a very cool factory option.

I had a FJ for two weeks before I traded it in for the 4Runner. The coolest part about the FJ is that is had no carpet anywhere making it easy to clean and spary down. The 4Runner should have the same option.
 
This is just an idea but if you have an "tractor supply co" store (maybe atwoods) in your area they sell a 4'x8'- 5/8" thick solid rubber mat - its thick and super tuff, you can get it for like $40. I used one in the back of a truck and we would drop engine blocks on it all the time with zero problems.

Make a template then cut it out with a jig saw. No hair problem - and very easy to remove and clean. It's also soft enough for dog to travel on and not slide around.
