Opinions on a fuel filter for a 1999 2.7L (PIC)

Hey guys,

I've been having some fuel related issues lately (see thread):

I was finally able to locate my fuel filter today; it's located under the intake manifold and looks like a complete PITA to change out. What are your thoughts on this, from the pic? It looks original and the rust leads me to believe that there might be a leak coming from it.

Haha, that's your starter man!

Typically you have to remove the starter to get the fuel filter out. I did mine when the transmission was out.

Complete pain in the ass.

Ugh, seriously? Even on the 2.7L? I know on the 3.4s, it's located under the driver-side seat area. If so...FACE PALM. Why does it look so corroded? Is that normal?

You can remove it without taking out the starter, but its going to be a PITA. Just unbolt the starter and it will give you better access to everything. remember it will leak a small amount of gasoline so donthave anything flammable around you.

What, the starter? I figure 13 years might do that... do they salt the roads in NC?

They do. And yeah, it's normal. If you take it off, take a wire brush to it and if you want, paint it with high temp paint. You'll be fine then.

That's light surface rust, not a big deal.

It might be easier to access your fuel filter, by removing the drivers side front wheel/tire, and gaining access through the the wheel well. That's what I have done to reach the fuel filter on the side of the engine block.

It's still not nearly as convenient a spot to reach, as the one on the V6 models.

Make sure you secure the 4Runner on jack stands so it doesn't fall off a jack and land on you. Make sure it's in gear and the parking brake is on, so it doesn't roll off the stands, either.

I know this is an older post, but wanted to reply....just changed mine out today by taking the driver side tire off. Bolts were a PITA but seemed like the easiest way
